"Good pay for Bristol considering the lack of long hours compared with City firms, as well as the cost of living in Bristol. The pay gap between us and our London counterparts shows more at qualification. However, as you get to more senior levels, I think the pay is appealing considering the Bristol lifestyle/cost of living we are afforded."

"Good pay – especially for a firm located outside of London."

"The pay as a trainee is generous."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"The pay is really good, especially for Bristol, and we get a bonus in September."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Pay as a trainee is very good. There's a limited increase between the first and second year and, once qualified, the jumps in salary are not as large as at London-based firms, but I'm not complaining!"
First year trainee, Bristol
"Bonuses could be more generous but basic pay is very good."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I am very happy with my pay currently. However, I am aware from friends at City firms that our bonuses are lower and the rise in wage as a new qualifier is nowhere near as large a step up as firms in the City."

"Pay for trainees is excellent. Bonuses could be improved. I think trainees who go the extra mile and put in long hours should be compensated for this, but I know this doesn't really happen in many firms and in any event our basic pay is very generous for Bristol (or for London firms of a similar size!)."

"The pay on offer at Burges Salmon is very good for a firm based outside of London."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"As a trainee, the pay is excellent and I have no complaints. However, as you progress through the firm the gap in pay between Burges Salmon and comparable firms grows ever wider. Given that hours are getting longer and longer here, this may have to be addressed in future."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Pay is very good for a regional firm but does not compete against City salaries. Our bonus system is not revealed to trainees."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I would say our salary is high, especially considering that Bristol has much lower living costs than London."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Excellent. Salaries are not numerically as much as that of a London trainee but the cost of living is reduced accordingly so I never feel like I am missing out. One thing I particularly like about the firm is the culture that everyone should be treated the same, and the bonus policy is no different. From trainees to senior associates, everybody gets the same."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Trainee salary is very competitive. However there is not much transparency surrounding bonuses."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"My level of pay is very competitive and stands up even against some of the London rates of pay. It allows for comfortable living in Bristol."

"Pay is good for trainees in the region, but I have worked similar hours to some friends at smaller London firms who get paid more."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Good pay for trainees but pay increases slow down a bit in the 0-3 PQE range, (especially compared with London firms)."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Pay is good for trainees, but on qualification drops down significantly in comparison to trainees in London, and considering that a) this is a 'City' firm and we do 'City' work and b) Bristol is the second most expensive city in UK that's not great. However, in saying that, the pay is still more than every other firm outside London, so it seems it is just a general policy for firms outside London. Bonus is very nice to get, but never amounts to more than £1000 which is then taxed, so again, not a patch on other top 50 law firm bonuses. Can't complain about extra money in the pay check however!"
Second year trainee, Bristol
"The bonus system is not very transparent. Pay is good though."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I think the salary is good and reflects what the firm expects of you as employees."
First year trainee, Bristol
"This is one of the best paying firms in Bristol and the trainee salary beats most other local firms by a good margin. There is a firm-wide annual bonus (last year capped at £1,000). I haven't yet experienced any other kind of bonus so I can't comment!"
