Satisfaction with Work

8.9 / 10

(based on 23 ratings in 2016)

2016

"The quality of the work and clients cannot be rivalled. Being in smaller teams means you are given more responsibility and run matters from an early stage. The team is always pushing you but is always supportive as well."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"The work can be very rewarding. You are definitely given responsibility straight away. There's very good-quality work and often high-profile transactions."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I have always been given a good mix of work and a lot of responsibility. In both real estate and banking there is the opportunity to run small transactions and I have been involved heavily on large deals."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I am relied upon by my team and have a lot of responsibility with high-quality clients. I was recently involved in an emergency application in London and a two-day hearing."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Work can obviously vary hugely. I have done all sorts of work, including drafting the contract and transfer for farmland worth millions of pounds, photocopying and bundling documents into around eighteen files for trial, drafting wills, ringing clients, finding archived documents, liaising with outside services, visiting clients at their houses, meeting clients in London, crunching numbers for a litigation matter, lots of billing and lots of file opening. It's inevitable that some pieces of work are more interesting than others but I have never felt that the work I was doing was just for the sake of it."
First year trainee, Bristol
"We do a great variety of work. I could be working on a big case for a huge multi-national or a small case for a Bristol farmer. This means I get great breadth in my experience."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I have been surprised by the level of responsibility I have been given and enjoyed how much I am included on matters despite the fact that I am only in each seat for four months."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I'm very satisfied with my work. Overall, trainees are given a high level of responsibility. This, of course, varies on department but the firm encourages trainees to get involved with a wide variety of work. Trainees are encouraged to take on challenging work at a high level."

"I have been assigned a real mix of work with varying levels of responsibility accordingly. Client contact is encouraged though."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Trainees are taken along to client meetings and have varying degrees of responsibility depending on the department and work. Day-to-day responsibilities vary and in four-month seats it's surprising how quickly we integrate into the department."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Generally trainees get good day-to-day responsibility. You may not have that much client interaction over the two years, but this does increase as you progress throughout the training contract."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"As trainees we are very much involved in deals and given a great deal of exposure to clients."
First year trainee, Bristol
"In my experience, second year trainees are treated as though they are NQs in terms of the level of responsibility, client contact and breadth of work we get involved in."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I am given responsibility and support. I have limited direct client interaction; although that is largely a result of the type of work I am currently doing and work I produce is often sent to clients after being amended by my supervisor. My day-to-day responsibilities mainly relate to drafting documents (some complicated) based on precedents, carrying out legal research and carrying out administrative tasks involved in file management."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Throughout my training contract I have been afforded the opportunity to engage with clients in numerous capacities, from business development, to handling matters on my own. All the while I have been supported as much or as little as I felt was necessary in the circumstances."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"I am in my qualification seat, so the work has noticeably ramped up, and I am being introduced to clients as a trainee who will shortly be qualifying into the department. There has been substantially more responsibility (and pressure) as a result, even compared with my previous seat. Responsibilities include standard trainee tasks of bundling, attendance note-taking, and calls and correspondence with the court, but also include substantial key correspondence with the other side."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Client interaction varies from department to department, as does responsibility. On the whole, there is a good level of responsibility coupled with a good level of supervision."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I am given a huge amount of responsibility for a first year trainee. I am taken to a lot of client meetings and am trusted to have direct client contact. I am certainly not sitting doing manual paperwork and have been very involved in matters."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Trainees get a lot of direct client contact and there are opportunities to have your own files and lead on others even within your first few seats. In my experience, the work is high quality and varied."

"I have been made to feel like a valued member of the team, and been given responsibility to do work that actually matters. I have had more client contact than I expected."
First year trainee, Bristol
"Lots of responsibility (i.e. not just document collation), a lot of client contact in certain seats from the start (e.g. Real Estate where you run your own matters) and an increasing amount across the board as the training contract goes on. Feel very much part of teams on matters, rather than just a discrete trainee resource."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"There is very interesting, important work to be done on a daily basis. As for client interaction, I'm on secondment on my second seat and dealing with a client on a daily basis."
First year trainee, Bristol
"As a trainee, you get a high level of responsibility early on and plenty of exposure to 'real work', not just photocopying or admin."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"The level of responsibility and client contact you receive varies between departments but generally client contact is high. Senior lawyers make a real effort to take you to as many meetings, hearings, trials and client events as possible and the firm is generally happy to write the time off for any learning opportunities."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"As a trainee you get the opportunity to attend lots of client meetings and interact with clients directly."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"Generally the level of responsibility is quite good, we are able to email clients and other solicitors and are expected to manage our own work and to use our initiative when working."
First year trainee, Bristol
"The role varies hugely from one seat to another. Overall I have enjoyed that variety, and most departments will try to get you as much client contact as they can within the context of the work you are involved with and the business need. Some seats (e.g. Real Estate) give you a lot of contact and responsibility with you driving many of the transactions yourself, while in others (e.g. Corporate) you will play a much more ancillary role as part of a larger team working on a few big transactions."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"The level of responsibility can be high - if you want the work it's up to you to go out and get it. The level of client interaction I had from the get-go exceeded my expectations."
First year trainee, Bristol
"At this stage, my contact with clients is still quite limited to daily emails, the odd phone call and an occasional meeting. But it's increasing and I expect significant client interaction by second year."
