For jobs in HR, make the CIPD your career partner

As the professional body for HR and people development, CIPD has over 130,000 members - working in Human Resources (HR), learning and development (L&D), people management and consulting across private businesses and organisations in the public and voluntary sectors in the UK, Ireland and internationally. As an independent and not for profit organisation we’re committed to championing better work and working lives for the benefit of individuals, businesses, economies and society. We’re also proud to be celebrating 100 years of leading HR into the future.

An exciting time to be working in HR

The very nature of work is changing and the unprecedented scale and pace of change presents an urgent and critical need to ensure the ways we work, our workforces and workplace cultures are fit for today and drive performance and growth for the future; which makes good HR and development critical to the success of businesses, economies and society.

HR professionals play a pivotal role in driving decisions that allow their organisations to thrive. They are involved in improving performance and creating the right conditions to deliver business aims today and in the future, by recruiting, training and developing employees, as well as looking at how they get rewarded. They also deal with legal issues, help to shape the culture of their organisations, and focus on what keeps their colleagues productive and engaged.

The necessary skills to succeed

The skills you need to work in HR may not be what you expect. It’s not just the softer ‘people skills’, you also need to have a strong interest in business and the strategy. You need a good degree of numeracy to analyse information such as employee surveys, key success indicators of projects or the financial and personal value of an employee to the organisation. The ability to coach others in the business, to partner (but also be willing to challenge) managers and to become someone they trust implicitly is also critical.

Qualifications to advance your career

CIPD's recognised professional qualifications are a great way to acquire the supporting knowledge and skills that are essential to becoming an effective HR or L&D practitioner. They also demonstrate to potential employers that you’re serious about pursuing a professional career.
