What do HR people do?
HR professionals play a pivotal role in driving decisions that allow their organisations to thrive. They are involved in improving performance and creating the right conditions to deliver business aims today and in the future. HR professionals recruit, train and develop employees, and look at how they are rewarded. They’re dealing with legal issues, helping to shape the culture of their organisations, and focusing on what keeps their colleagues productive and engaged.
The skills necessary to succeed
The skills you need to work in HR may not be what you expect. It’s not just the softer ‘people skills’, you also need to have a strong interest in business and the strategy. You need a good degree of numeracy to analyse information including employee surveys, key success indicators of projects, or the financial and personal value of an employee to the organisation. The ability to coach others in the business, to partner (but also be willing to challenge) managers and to become someone they trust implicitly is also critical.
Qualifications to advance your career
CIPD's recognised professional qualifications are a great way to acquire the supporting knowledge and skills that are essential to becoming an effective HR or L&D practitioner. They also demonstrate to potential employers that you’re serious about pursuing a professional career. CIPD qualifications have the ability to add real value to an organisation – helping to increase your employability and earning potential.
When you start your CIPD qualification, you’ll join us as a Student member. CIPD student membership gives you access to valuable resources you can apply to your studies and also in the workplace. After study, CIPD professional membership and designatory letters are a must-have when demonstrating your qualified status and relevant experience.
