CII - Discover Risk
Who is the CII?
The CII is the world’s largest professional body for insurance, risk and financial services.
We have more than 115,000 members working in small and large companies in over 150 countries. Our globally-recognised and respected professional qualifications benefit those at all stages of their careers.
Can the CII get me a job?
Through our free Discover membership, we bring details of internships and graduate roles to your inbox. We also bring you closer to graduate recruiters through our monthly updates, free Discover member speed networking events and Discover Risk website.
What is a career in insurance and financial services?
Whatever you make it.
Whether you are an analytical lover of data or a strong builder of client relationships, there is a role to suit you.
Insurance allows consumers and businesses to function, in any sector in any country. To achieve this, there are technical roles in actuarial, broking, claims, loss adjusting, modelling, reinsurance and underwriting – the list is actually too long to give here. You can find out more about all relevant technical roles on the Discover Risk website. There are also the key business support roles including finance, HR, IT, management, marketing and sales.
Financial services (in our case, wealth management) allows specialist advisers to help clients secure their financial future for themselves and their families. Again, there are client-facing and back-office roles to fit your preference.
Do I need to have a finance/numerate degree?
No. Both our specialist areas recruit based on who you are, not what you have studied. There are even some companies who don’t insist on a strong mathematical degree subject for actuarial roles. One of the strengths of both sectors is the diversity of background of those working in them.
At this stage of your studies, building networks and your knowledge of the sector are key – hence our free membership offer.
Will I get professional development?
Both insurance and financial services companies pride themselves on strong professional development. That’s great news for you as you will be developed through to Chartered status in either area – as well as holding globally-recognised qualifications that set you apart from others and boost your earning potential.
How healthy are the sectors?
CII membership has almost doubled in size in the last 15 years. Both insurance and our part of financial services offer excellent opportunities – the former because it is a global sector with opportunities to move to markets anywhere in the world; the latter because companies are now looking more than ever to graduates to grow their businesses
