We recruit the brightest and best graduates into the Civil Service and give them the skills, knowledge and experience they need to become effective and inspiring leaders at the heart of the political process.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office promotes British interests overseas, and supports our businesses and citizens around the world through our offices in the UK and our network of diplomatic posts in other countries.
Our officers work on everything from negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU to supporting British nationals affected by natural disasters and terrorist attacks overseas.
You'll discover that there is no such thing as a typical diplomatic career. You could be promoted in London, working in one of our small, challenging or remote embassies, or concentrating on global issues in one of our larger embassies like Washington and Paris, or with our team of negotiators at the UN in New York.
You might focus on bilateral work, multilateral work, consular support, media and communications or project management, or decide to specialise in a particular region of the world. What's certain is that you will change roles routinely every 3-4 years, beginning with policy and moving on to operations – this could include working in a Minister’s office, in a media office, in the consular department, or working on commercial issues in UK Trade and Investment.
If you successfully complete the scheme and are promoted, you could earn c. £45k-£55k. Other benefits include the Civil Service pension scheme, professional qualifications, flexible working, season ticket loans, sports and social activities, childcare assistance and more.
