"There is an 'open-door' policy, and both solicitors and partners are very good with feedback. They regularly update you on how well you are doing, and show you how you can improve."

"From my experience, there is no end to the amount of help available and recognition of the role you perform at Clifford Chance."

"There is a genuine 'open-door' policy and I have had support from the regular appraisal system. Throughout my training contract people have been more than happy to explain deals to me."
Second year trainee, London
"I have found that both solicitors and partners are very supportive, and they are the best mentors for trainees."

"Every supervisor I have had has been friendly and approachable. I have always felt able to ask any question I may have and they have taken time to explain concepts and give career advice."
Second year trainee, London
"Each trainee gets two appraisals during a seat - mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisal. They are very informative, helpful and supervisors take time to provide constructive and beneficial advice. When you complete your work, you generally get some feedback, so you always know whether what you did was useful or not."

"I think a lot of it is learning on-the-job, but there are so many great materials you can have access to, and there's always someone you can ask to get you started on something new to you. I've managed to get a lot of feedback on drafting to a specific audience, and opportunities to present to my department my ideas and research, as well as experience talking on the phone to clients and other third parties. My supervisor is my rock, she's really forgiving and kind as she understands what it's like to be a trainee, and she always wants to get me on the right track."
First year trainee, London
"I have had mixed levels of involvement from my mentoring partners. My most recent one took me out to a welcome lunch and we have had regular meetings about my progress."
First year trainee, London
"Training and mentoring is generally very good. Trainees receive appraisals every three months."
Second year trainee, London
"The 'open-door' policy means you learn a lot on a day-to-day basis by knocking on doors and asking questions."
First year trainee, Frankfurt
"We get a performance review every three months. Positive feedback is offered as well as constructive criticism. Partners provide mentorship but you must seek them out yourself to get this."
Second year trainee, London
"Solicitors are very accessible, Partners are approachable, and have always taken an interest in my training. Appraisals take place every three months, and if you play an instrumental role in a key deal then you are included in a notification published on the firm intranet."
Second year trainee, Tokyo
"It is down to the trainee to strike up a good relationship with a partner or an associate. If you do, they will help, advise and informally train you."
Second year trainee, Frankfurt
"Mentoring varies enormously depending on who you are working for. Some people have the gift of being good mentors, others not so much and I don't perceive that they are given the training that might help them become good. In terms of performance feedback, generally people are very direct which can take some getting used to. Praise is usually in the form of positive comments in emails or in your end of seat appraisal."
Second year trainee, London
"People do take an interest in the trainees and help them develop their skills. Feedback is sometimes given at the end of a transaction and on delivering a particular piece of work. Good work is always praised."
Second year trainee, London
"My supervisors have been very supportive and happy to answer questions and the feedback I have received has very good and has also helped me to improve my skills and my performance."

"I have been in one department where people were not so good at giving feedback, but the others have been fine. Partner accessibility varies by department."
First year trainee, London
"I have experienced several great mentors at the firm and everyone genuinely wants to help you learn and improve, partners included. I have also experienced a mentor who, whilst getting the best out of you, made your life a living hell. I have to say they are in the very small minority though."
First year trainee, London
"A bit patchy, depends on the supervisor you get. Feedback is sometimes difficult to get."
Second year trainee, London
"As always, depends on the mentor - but the majority of my experience has been very positive. We have mid-seat and end-of-seat feedback and each of the associates and partners you work for will give feedback as you go. You are thanked and praised often especially at the end of big deals."
Second year trainee, London
"Mentoring is very variable and dependent on your supervisor, but my experience has been entirely positive."
Second year trainee, London
"Partners and associates are generally willing to give feedback and answer your questions. Mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisals are also helpful. Some people are very thankful for the work you do and go out of their way to make this known if they are particularly impressed."
Second year trainee, London
"Very good mentoring system - good work is recognised and areas for improvement are highlighted in a constructive manner."
