Interview Questions

2016

"I was mostly asked scenario-based questions. I would be given a scenario and then I would have to talk through how I would deal with it. The scenarios involved situations that you would likely encounter as a trainee within the office."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"A lot of typical interview questions were asked as well as some situational questions ie what would you do if, at the last minute, you were given two pieces of work that would need to be finished at the same time and you knew that you would not be able to complete them both?"
First year trainee, London
"Competency-based questions during the vacation scheme and interview eg give us examples of how you work in a team. There are more trainee-based questions during the partner interview eg how well do you prioritise tasks?"
First year trainee, Glasgow
"I was asked a range of questions about my application and the usual questions about why I would want to work at CMS."
First year trainee, Rio de Janeiro / London
"I was asked about a new development in the law that I thought was of interest and relevance to the firm."
First year trainee, London
"How would you pitch CMS to a prospective client in the energy sector?"
First year trainee, London
"I got asked about things that were on my CV such as: I see you were the captain of X – tell me more about that. What was your role and responsibilities? I was also asked: what do you think are the most important factors or issues impacting on the legal sector at the moment?"
First year trainee, Glasgow
"Why CMS? Why law? Who are our competitors? How would you work with someone who was being difficult? What is the most important area for us to focus on currently? There was also a commercial awareness discussion."
First year trainee, London

2015

"There were general competency questions in my interview; such as tell us a time when you showed leadership, when you overcame failure and when you worked in a team; alongside firm/law-related questions, such as which departments would be involved in X and Y's merger and there were corporate social responsibility related questions."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked to identify why I wanted to work in a law firm, and why for CMS in particular. I had to talk about a commercial story that I have heard in the news. This was alongside standard competency questions."
Second year trainee, London
"Here I was asked competency based questions and commercial questions, as well as questions about me and my motivations for becoming a lawyer, and for applying to CMS."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked questions to highlight my skill set: teamwork, leading a project, when have others let me down. I was also given a case study scenario of two companies merging: what are the relevant considerations and what departments would need to advise, for instance."
Second year trainee, London
"Questions included a time when I planned an event; how I overcame a difficult problem and my biggest achievement to date."
Second year trainee, London
"The first interview with HR is a standard competency interview. You will have to come up with some examples for various competencies. Some of these are quite specific, so make sure you have a range of examples in mind to use. The partner interview also covered competencies and some fairly standard commercial awareness type questions, plus a general chat."
First year trainee, London
"Along with identifying why I wanted to work in law and for CMS in particular, I had to define my strengths and weaknesses. I was asked why I studied law, and given questions about my past work experience. I was also presented with a hypothetical deal and asked general questions about it to show my commercial awareness."
First year trainee, Munich

2014

"They asked me about my views on current issues, problem solving question about hypothetical deal and who would be best placed within the firm to assist."
First year trainee, London
"The questions were along the lines of: why law, why CMS, competency based questions, and commercial issues."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked why I wanted to become a solicitor, why I wanted to work here, why I wanted to work in London, etc."
Second year trainee, London
"Questions included: name a time you faced adversity. Tell me about a time you worked in a team. Show me how you have used your initiative."
First year trainee, Glasgow
"There were lots of questions about me - my interests, subjects I had studied, my motivation. Nothing on commercial awareness (though I think this is because we ran out of time)."
Second year trainee, london
"Why law? Why CMS? Can you see yourself in law in 20 years' time?"
First year trainee, London
"Why do you want to become a lawyer? Biggest achievement? Talk about a time you failed at something? Demonstrate a time you worked in a team? Tell me about yourself. Did you enjoy your vacation scheme/what did you like about it? Why CMS?"
First year trainee, London
"I was asked a range of questions on the key competencies, for example, team work and organisational skills. I was also asked questions on the current economic climate and how the credit crunch affected law firms."
