The firm offers a structured two-week placement for up to eight students in June/July of each year. We limit the number of places in order to give students a really 'hands-on' experience, normally in two differing areas. This enables you to get involved in a variety of work, with a variety of people, giving you the opportunity to really get to know the firm, its culture and the work it does. Applications should be made online from around mid October 2018. We do not review applications on a rolling basis but shortlisting may begin ahead of the final deadline of 31 January 2019. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete an online critical thinking appraisal, those who perform most impressively will be invited to attend a half-day assessment consisting of a commercial case study (group exercise). Those who most closely match what Cooley is looking for will be offered interviews with a variety of the firm's lawyers in the afternoon of this day. The summer programme is open to law students in their penultimate and final years', non-law students in their final year and graduates/those already at law school.
If you want to consider joining Cooley you will need to be stimulated by solving business and legal challenges. Academic excellence, requirements are a minimum 2.1 at degree level for any discipline and 320 UCAS points or equivalent, not to include points from AS levels or general studies (128 points under the new 2017 UCAS tariff), great analytical skills and a rigorous approach are essential. You should be able to demonstrate plenty of energy, drive and determination. Your understanding of business and commercial considerations, in addition to client relationships should be of a good standard. You will also be adaptable and capable of thinking on your feet. You should have developed great communication and interpersonal skills from a variety of situations. Understanding teamwork, evidence of leadership and seeking responsibilities are vital. Interesting achievements and making the most of non-academic and work experience (not necessarily all legal) opportunities will help applicants stand-out.
Applications welcome from both law and non-law disciplines.
The summer programme is the only route into getting a training place at Cooley (UK). Therefore if you think you might like to train at the firm you should apply for the programme.
