"The hours vary depending on a number of factors including the time of year, the department and often whether your supervisor is busy. I have never been in the office on a weekend and I have logged in from home only twice in one year. People are very grateful for the work you put in and it is very rare that you will have late finishes for a sustained period of time, just a few days here and there."

"This depends largely on the seat you are in and obviously how busy the department is but hours are very reasonable overall."
Second year trainee, London
"I have worked late nights on occasion but I can come in late the following day."
Second year trainee, London
"My hours are generally 9.00 am to 7.30 pm but they are highly dependent on how busy the department is at a particular time. There is no expectation to stay if you're not busy but you will be expected to work late and sometimes on the weekend if there is urgent work to be done. Supervisors are generally flexible if you need to leave on time to catch a train or for an appointment."

"There are times when you are expected to stay to help during busy periods but there is no culture of staying for the sake of it. If you have finished your work, you are encouraged to go home. People respect social commitments when they can, though you will inevitably have to rearrange plans sometimes."
First year trainee, London
"It's all about managing your own workload. If you need to come in early and stay late then you do so, but if you have finished your work by 6.30 pm, you can leave at 6.30 pm."

"The firm does not have a work at home policy for trainees but that is to be expected as contact hours in the office are particularly useful for trainees."
First year trainee, London
"The firm is flexible if you have an appointment. Hours depend on the department but around 9.00 am to 8.00 pm is pretty average."
Second year trainee, London
"Expect long hours, although this differs between departments. Work comes first so you may have to cancel plans unless they are very important."
First year trainee, London
"It depends on the department and your supervisor. Some can be flexible, but others not so much."
First year trainee, London
"Your hours can be flexible depending on the supervisor and how busy the department is. You're not expected to stay late if there is no work to be done."
Second year trainee, London
"My hours have ranged hugely depending on the department I'm in. My previous department had very long hours whereas my current department is very quiet and so my hours are more reasonable."
First year trainee, London
"It's much better in the more niche departments and you can scrape together some sort of social life. If you work in corporate, finance or funds you'll often be working late for sure."
