Interview Questions

2016

First year trainee, London
"What does a lawyer do? What skills can you bring to the firm? Can you talk about a business story in the news that has caught your interest? Can you talk about a business person you admire?"
First year trainee, London
"Are you a natural-born leader? What would you do if you had a flight booked/hugely important personal event that evening and a partner asked you to stay late to assist on an urgent task? Tell me about a time when you overcame a difficult situation."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"Why DLA Piper? Why law? Tell us about your employment history. Most of the questioning stemmed from the interviewers asking me about my employment throughout school and university."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"I was asked about DLA's sector approach and the future of the legal sector. I was also asked about my greatest weakness."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"Why DLA? Why Leeds? I was asked a series of competency-based questions and some commercial awareness questions eg why a certain company was having financial difficulties and if I worked in that industry what measures would I suggest to attract new customers. I was also asked questions relating to a presentation I gave."
First year trainee, Leeds
"More of a chat than a question and answer session. I had a lot of political activism on my application so was asked how I saw that fitting in with the business."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Lots of commercial questions about the news article that I had discussed in my application. Why Leeds? Where do you see yourself in ten years?"
First year trainee, Leeds
"Why DLA Piper? Why Manchester? What work have you done on the vacation scheme? Situational questioning such as: a partner has told you a piece of work you have done is wrong but you are sure it's right, what do you do?"
Second year trainee, Manchester
"I was asked general questions about why I wanted to change careers, which was my favourite/least favourite subject on the GDL (graduate diploma in law) and why, and then some more commercial questions relating to client quotes and taking on new work from clients (all to assess commercial awareness of what a law firm would look for in a potential new client)."
Second year trainee, Manchester

"In my interview they wanted to discover why I wanted to work at DLA Piper, what I had learned about the firm over the course of the vacation scheme that I had undertaken. They were particularly interested in why I wanted to work in Manchester, and what I knew about the legal market in Manchester, and who would be our competitors there. Most questions were specifically related to information I had given on my CV."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"There were a few competency questions, but I was mainly asked personal questions to try and heighten the firm's understanding of who I was, such as what my motivations were and how well I understood the industry."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I was asked which other firms I had applied to and why, who I saw as DLA Piper's main competitors were, and which area of law I most interested in. This was in addition to questions such as why I thought Obama won a second term."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked to tell my interviewers about myself without repeating anything I had written on my CV or application form."
Second year trainee, London
"There was lots of situational questions which would ask what you would do in certain situations. Some people recently have said that the interviews at DLA Piper are more informal and more like a chat."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"I was asked which news stories I was currently following, why I wanted to become a lawyer and what the main expenses are in running a City law firm."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked why I chose DLA Piper, alongside what I think makes a good trainee, what challenges do you see for law firms in the medium term, and questions such as if I was Simon Levine for the day what would I do."
Second year trainee, Liverpool
"I was asked what I thought the future of the firm looked like, who our main competitors are and what we could do to continue to be a key player in the legal profession."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"In the interview for the training contract (on the vacation scheme you have an assessment day for the training contract) I was asked about international politics, as this had been my degree subject, and I was given a number of scenario questions. My advice with these is to take your time, and think carefully, but stand by your answers if they are genuinely what you think even when challenged."
Second year trainee, London
"At my interview I was asked which law I could change if I could change one."
Second year trainee, Manchester
