I enjoyed the problem solving aspect of some of the modules on my course but I didn’t particularly have a lot of experience in programming. I saw Dorset Software’s advert for a developer role explaining that they provide training to help you get up to speed, so I quickly applied. After a phone call I was invited for an interview at their office which was a great opportunity to get to know the company and see if it was a good fit. All in all the recruitment process was incredibly fast, going from applying to accepting a job in just a few weeks.

The first few months was spent completing an intensive course in programming, learning a wide range of concepts, technologies and methodologies from the ground up. During this time you are supported by a mentor who is more than happy to help you get to grips with some of the more abstract ideas.

A typical day can range from investigating bugs in a client’s software to providing proofs of concept for new pieces of technology. So far I’ve helped to upgrade a multinational banking platform and supported high profile companies in the day to day running of their systems, so the work has definitely been varied. I’ve worked at a couple of different client sites and everything was taken care of from the accommodation to travel arrangements.

Dorset Software is a fantastic company to work for and I really enjoy the variety with each week bringing something different to focus on. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and there is always someone to help you out if you need it. There are various sporting and social activities during the week as well as the weekly pub trips which are a great way to get to know people in both the company and in Poole.
