Informal Training & Mentoring

7.9 / 10

(based on 21 ratings in 2016)

"This solely depends on the quality of your supervisor and the team. I've had some great mentors and I've had some bad mentors. The layout of the office is meant to encourage better supervision, particularly from partners. Sometimes though, it is difficult to get anywhere in terms of feedback, work etc. It is certainly an area to work on to ensure that trainee utilisation isn't wasted."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"From personal experience, supervisors have always been willing to listen and explain things to you. Other fee earners within the team have always readily assisted when needed."
First year trainee, Leeds
"Everyone I have met so far in the business is more than willing to give their time to help with anything at all. There are several people in the departments that I have worked in that I remain in contact with and see as mentors. These are new qualifiers, senior solicitors, associates, and partners."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Generally very good, again department-specific. Everyone is friendly and approachable. While some have a very hands-on approach to mentoring, others take a more laid-back stance."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"Partners are very approachable and willing to give productive feedback."
First year trainee, London
"The solicitors and partners make excellent mentors, but there is no formal mentoring programme in place."
Second year trainee, Liverpool
"I've always been encouraged by my supervisors and have found other team members to be really approachable. Feedback from your supervisor is provided every two months during a mid-seat review and end-of-seat review. Regular meetings with HR are also organised."
Second year trainee, Manchester

"I have had very good supervisors on the whole, and found that they care about your development and job satisfaction."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"Both informal training and mentoring are good. I get regular feedback and I am always provided with templates and explanations as to why work is structured."
Second year trainee, Liveprool
"All of my supervisors have been extremely supportive and accessible, particularly as I have been sat next to them! The teams have been giving of their time. All of my appraisals have been positive and constructive. The firm encourages praise to be given on the Yammer network, so the whole firm can see the good work that is going on in the offices."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"The firm has great supervisors and partners: they always give constructive feedback and I feel like one of the team."
First year trainee, Glasgow
"Partners are extremely accessible in my opinion. I have never had that 'thrown under a bus' moment where someone dumps a load of work on you at 5:00pm on a Friday and then leaves. The partners are very commercial, and great lawyers."
First year trainee, Leeds
"As a trainee you have a partner supervisor in each seat. The training is second to none as partners are really grateful for the resource and keen to take you along to meetings and court etc. You have a mid-seat review with your supervisor during each seat as well as an end-of-seat appraisal."
Second year trainee, Newcastle
"Informal training and mentoring is very good. If you make yourself known in the firm everyone is approachable. A number of partners who I haven't directly worked for have given me work or informal advice along the way."
First year trainee, London

"I have had some fantastic mentors/supervisors who I look up to. My current supervisor is very inspirational and is very good and delegating work to me. She will explain the reasoning behind what she does so that I can understand and learn from her. She gives fantastic feedback which has really helped with my confidence. I also speak a lot to the other trainees as they know what you are going through and are very supportive. There is no feeling of ‘competition’ as the other trainees genuinely want to help. There is a real sense of teamwork."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"I have found the partners really approachable and very willing to give constructive feedback. The head of the Leeds office champions young talent and has given me some fantastic opportunities and got me involved in some very interesting work - as a mentor you could not find anyone better!"
Second year trainee, Leeds
"There wasn't much in the way of mentoring when I started, but there is a new 'buddy system' for existing and new trainees which will start this year."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"All solicitors/partners I have worked for or with on projects have been great at providing feedback and identifying where improvements can be made in the future."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Supervisors are very hands on and approachable. They invest a lot of time in the trainees and are always happy to help and answer any questions. Trainees set objectives at the start of each seat and have an interim review. There is also a final appraisal at the end of each seat. Feedback is also constant throughout the seat."
First year trainee, Liverpool
"Everyone is very approachable and encourage non-chargeable work which will develop us personally, such as attending meetings and court hearings and any training offered across the firm. The feedback has generally been extremely positive and constructive."
First year trainee, Newcastle upon Tyne
"Both of the teams I have worked in have been brilliant. The members of the teams have been encouraging and have answered any questions I may have had. The open-plan offices make it easier to receive feedback from different levels."
First year trainee, Leeds
"I have a weekly catch up with a solicitor supervisor who gives me one-to-one feedback regularly. She keeps me on my toes, testing my legal understanding and letting me know how I can be a better trainee."
First year trainee, Leeds

"This varies from person to person but from my experience there are normally people who are willing to help you and provide you with feedback and guidance as required."
First year trainee, London
"Some excellent individual supervisors and partners with a keen interest in trainee development."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Partners are very accessible but not always suitable mentors. Better left to more junior fee earners who can be more hands on."
Newly qualified solicitor, Manchester
"The lay-out of the office is open-plan, so there is always somebody to talk to if you need some help. In each seat you are allocated a supervisor who will provide you with feedback during informal chats and mid-seat review discussions. On the whole, the informal training is good although if you are allocated a supervisor that is very busy, it can sometimes be difficult to get thorough feedback on your work."
First year trainee, Newcastle
"Some are better than others. I've had two mentors so far, and one has been quite supportive, but the other is genuinely too busy to spend a lot of time mentoring. I don't generally get a great deal of performance feedback, other than at my quarterly review."
First year trainee, Glasgow
"All supervisors receive training, which I believe is refreshed throughout the year. I have received performance feedback throughout every seat (not just at the final appraisal) and praise/recognition of a job well done where appropriate."
Second year trainee, Manchester
