Which rail companies could I work in?

FirstGroup is one of the UK's most experienced rail operators running every type of service from long distance, regional, commuter and sleeper services between Cornwall to Scotland. We currently operate three franchises in which we place graduates – Great Western Railway, TransPennine Express, South Western Railway as well as one open access passenger rail service – Hull Trains. We transport over 140 million passengers a year and operate over 1,200 vehicles. Across all operations, we are working in partnership with industry partners and local stakeholders to provide better rail services, keeping people moving and communities prospering across the country.   

What does the programme involve?

There are no comfort zones on this two-year programme. So, you'll need plenty of drive as you get to grips with real-life projects and embark on a fast-moving learning journey.

Your ability to build solid relationships and collaborate with your colleagues at every level will be key. Ours is a fast-moving operation in more ways than one, so you'll also be able to think on your feet and devise innovative solutions to any challenges that come your way. It's about being creative, looking at things from a new angle, finding ways to do things differently, yet effectively and being resilient to obstacles and set-backs that come your way. Whilst always, always putting the safety of our passengers and our people first.

You'll get stuck in from day one and over the two years you'll get fully involved in:

  • Inspections, servicing diagnosis and repairs
  • Learning about depot engineering management in a variety of roles
  • Technical solutions and engineering design projects
  • An industry placement
  • Understanding how the business operates
  • UK Engineering Performance and project and contract management.

Who are you looking for and what qualifications do I need?

To get started you'll have at least a 2:2 BEng or an MEng accredited by the IMechE or IET.

You'll be mentored at every stage and we will work with you to ensure you realise your full potential. We're looking for ambitious graduates who have their sights set on a management role and Chartered Engineer status, you'll have a real willingness to keep on learning from others plus the determination to drive your own development too.  You should also feel confident and comfortable working in demanding commercial environment and strongly believe in the organisations goals and values, the customer should be at the heart of everything you do.

Where will I be located?

As you'll be working across our business in various rail depots, you'll need to be flexible over the course of the programme to moving around. You'll also spend time on placements with suppliers away from home.

How will I be selected?

Successful applicants will undergo a 5-stage selection process. Apply and we will invite you to complete some online tests. If you get through these, you'll be asked to undertake a video interview. This may then result in you being invited to an assessment centre, which if passed will lead to an offer for a place on the next graduate programme starting in September 2019.
