Interview: Tips & Advice

2017

"The vacation scheme route involves completing a written application followed by the vacation scheme itself and finally an assessment day. The training contract-only route is similar but without the need to work in the firm for a week. My main tips for the application are to keep it succinct but to showcase your best qualities, fitting these within the scope of the question. With regard to the assessment day, prepare the presentations as far as you can beforehand and practise delivering presentations with friends and family beforehand. At the interview, make sure to demonstrate that you know what the firm is about and how you can contribute to the success of the firm."

"I completed the vac scheme, which involved a week of work experience and talks from various departments to give us a flavour of the different sectors across the firm. After this candidates are selected for the assessment day. There were three tasks on the day itself. The first was to prepare and present a presentation as a group, the second was an interview and the third was a written exercise that involved carrying out some research and drafting a note for our supervisor. To prepare, it is definitely worth trying to get some experience with giving presentations either at work or university, or even just practising on your family. If you can get used to presenting then it might help take away some of the nerves on the day as that was definitely one of the more intimidating parts. For the interview, try and prepare some stock answers to common questions."

"Research firms in the South West and understand the market pressures as this is a key focus of the firm. Have a keen interest in a few areas of law but demonstrate your ability to be flexible."

"The application process consisted of an online application form followed up by an assessment day. The assessment day itself consisted of a group presentation, a timed written exam and a formal interview with a partner and a senior member of HR."

"There's an application form comprised of six to eight questions ranging from specifics about Foot Anstey through to general legal interest. My advice, as always, would be to do your research on the firm (more than just reading the website) in order to understand the key drivers and to ensure that you can clearly demonstrate why Foot Anstey is the firm you want to work for."

"Research the firm and practice presentation techniques. The assessment day consists of a presentation to a large panel, a written exercise and an interview."

"A mix of interview questions, group presentation and an IT-based research task."

"Get your face seen and remembered. The firm receives many applications of high calibre. Speaking face to face at law fairs and open evenings with pre-prepared, firm-centric questions will get you noticed and remembered."
First year trainee, Taunton
"There's an online application form followed by an assessment day. The assessment day consists of a group presentation, written exercise and interview as well as lots of opportunities to ask current trainees about the firm. My advice would be to be yourself and to research the firm well. Also, you should have a good grasp of what is currently going on in the news."
First year trainee, Exeter
"You can apply with or without a vacation scheme. For the assessment day, which includes an interview, be open and friendly. Listening skills are really valued so don't feel you have to be jumping in to say something clever all the time."
First year trainee, Exeter
"Ensure that you are very familiar with your application and be able to expand on any points that you mentioned in detail."
