What is your role in the team?
I have joined the team at the Associate grade. There is a clear progression path at FTI, for which the first milestone is passing the professional exams, together with meeting a number of objectives that are put in place to guide our development.
What are your main responsibilities on a day-to-day basis?
My work is split between compliance and advisory projects, across different industries. In Tax we are generally office-based and on a day to day basis I am generally involved with a number of different clients at any one time, which could involve preparing tax computations, undertaking technical or client research, or drafting reports.
What is your greatest achievement/proudest moment/highlight so far?
Authoring a report for a biomedical research institute on various tax liabilities and models for their new research centre in Central London. I enjoyed the chance to work for such a prestigious and high-profile client as well as the level of responsibility I was offered.
What training and support have you received so far?
I have begun studying for the ACA CTA Joint Programme which is a relatively new course combining the well-established and widely recognised qualifications. This will give me a broad and hugely advantageous professional qualification to take forward in my career. At FTI, I also have a career mentor, performance manager and buddy to cover all aspects of working life.
What attracted you to FTI’s graduate scheme?
The main draw was the chance to work in a highly experienced and rapidly growing team. The brochures promised early exposure in a wide range of industries and that is exactly what it has delivered. The company as a whole is growing rapidly and is an exciting place to be.
What sort of people do you work with?
The team is full of all kinds of specialists and professionals from Chartered Tax Advisers to Surveyors. The senior management have a wealth of experience, which they are more than happy to share. There is an open door policy, with all senior management keen to help as much as possible as I learn.
How did you come to be on this graduate scheme?
Whilst studying history at university, I decided I would like to pursue a career in Financial Services with grounding in a well-respected professional qualification. Tax, with a mix of compliance and advisory work, allowed me to do so. Having previously interned at a ‘Big 4’ accounting firm, at which I enjoyed my time, I found that my work became too specialised and unvaried. I wanted to find a firm that offered the same level of professional training and quality of staff, but where I would be able to experience different industries and specialisms.
What have you been involved in outside of the day to day?
The highlight so far was our team ‘away weekend’ in Barcelona. We have an active social calendar within both the team and the wider firm, including sports and charitable events. FTI also offers a comprehensive personal and professional development programme as well as regular seminars to learn about different areas of the business and develop your internal network.
What do you most value about working at FTI Consulting?
Initially it was the welcoming atmosphere in the office. Any trepidation before starting work was quickly alighted when I joined. This atmosphere, now I have settled into work, has translated into an approachable and open working environment, where I am able to become involved in a variety of exciting projects.
