I chose to apply for GallifordTry due to their brand presence in my locality and the diversification of the company i.e. Linden Homes, Building and Infrastructure etc. My route in obtaining the job was initially submitted my CV with a cover letter explaining why I felt I was suitable for the role. I then was invited to do both an aptitude test and telephone interview. The final part of the process was a face to face interview with the Managing Director and an HR Representative.
As Quantity Surveyor, I manage all the financial aspects of the project, including profit, cash flows, budgets, forecasts, valuing works on site and paying subcontractors. Furthermore, I am responsible for procuring subcontractors, enforcing contractual obligations and managing client expectations.
My main form of training received is on the job training which provides me with great opportunities to gain new knowledge and experience. I have also received structured training through the Graduate Development Programme which comprises 6 modules covering team working, leadership, management and presentation skills.
The Highlight for me has been working on a wide range of projects including universities, schools and listed buildings, which has provided me with a range of experiences. I have also been provided with responsibility from day one which shows a lot of trust and makes you feel part of the team straight away.
What I enjoy most
What I most enjoy is the team effort, the stress that comes with working to tight deadlines, the satisfaction of making money (for the job) and the pleasure of building something. I also enjoy the fact that no single day is the same, the diversity of the job is incredible and at each day is different.
The main challenge I have encountered is understanding the technical detail and contract wording. I have overcome this by going on to site and asking subcontractors and colleagues about interface detail as well as reading about contracts and attending CPD seminars and construction related exhibitions.
Why I like working for GallifordTry
I like working for the company mainly because of the opportunities that are presented by a Tier 1 Main contractor. Also, my site team, future talent Team and senior staff have provided me with support when required. In a company this large you can just feel like a cog, however the relationships I have gained with directors and colleagues at all levels has been very welcoming and warming.
