I first chose to work at Gerald Eve when applying for a placement year position as part of my university degree. I was attracted to the companies’ structure; not a big corporate, however a firm with size and scale as well as a longstanding reputation within the industry. Being a partner led business Gerald Eve also offered something different to a number of its competitors. After successful completion of my placement year I was fortunate enough to be offered a graduate positon to return to university with. I have since completed my degree and re-joined the company in September 2016.
I am currently seated within the Central London Investment department, where the team advise investors and owner-occupiers on the acquisition and disposal of assets within the London markets. Due to the nature of the surveying industry there is no ‘typical’ day, however my current duties include keeping track of investment opportunities and completed deals, meeting with other agents to source new opportunities, running valuations and cash flow appraisals, as well as assisting with the due diligence required as part of the transaction process.
The training on offer at Gerald Eve is largely diverse. From firm wide CPD lunches to structured APC seminars, there is training on offer for everyone. There are also in-house mentoring schemes designed to assist employees with their career progression. This is particularly useful when starting out your career as well as undertaking the APC.
The graduate scheme offers four 6 month rotations within various areas of the business. This allows you to gain experience within numerous surveying disciplines whilst working on an array of property sectors. As Gerald Eve provides consultancy in a number of ‘specialist’ areas, you will more than likely get to work within an area of the surveying profession which you didn’t even know existed.
During my placement year I worked within the Leisure and Hotels department. During my time there I assisted on the rent review of the London Eye – something which you don’t get to do every day as a surveyor, let alone whilst on placement year.
I enjoy the diversity of the surveying profession, whereby you get to work on a number of different projects for a wide range of clients; this makes every day as interesting as the last.
I enjoy working for Gerald Eve as the size and structure of the company makes you feel valued as an individual and not just a number. Nonetheless, the businesses growth prospects present a long-term opportunity for career progression. On the social side there are various events throughout the year, including charity race nights, informal drinks, team away days and firm wide conferences. Graduates also get involved with softball during the summer months as well as hockey, football and netball teams which are played by all levels within the firm. Combined, this really makes the company an all-round great place to start out your career within the surveying profession.
