"From an early stage, I was given client exposure and a high level of responsibility."
London
"My role differs depending on the team I'm on. I can be given a lot of responsibilities in the day-to-day management of cases if there is a gap between myself and the next, more senior, attorney for example. I will be having a lot of direct interaction with clients and with the opposite party. I will also be tasked with taking the case forward. My role will be less involved if the team is structured in a way where I am the only junior. The work will be more the administration-based with such tasks as legal research, managing the documents and dealing with the facts."

"I have a high level of responsibility with regular client contact. I really feel like I am part of the team and make a valued contribution to the service delivered to the client."
Second year trainee, London
"I have lots of client interaction and responsibility but I never feel pushed to go out of my depth. Because we're in a small team, everyone has to do occasional basic tasks that only trainees would do in a bigger firm. On the plus side, this creates a tighter unit as there is no sense that you are ever too senior to help out your colleagues."
Second year trainee, London
"I have had a lot of client interaction from an early stage in my career. I attended court on a number of occasions, drafted many different types of documents and felt like my work was valued."
First year trainee, London
"I largely have a great time at work. You receive quality work and your output is expected to be the same. It's challenging but rewarding. On the transactional side, you are expected to do a lot of drafting, which is great, but most of the matters are new so I also spend some of my day researching and getting up to speed with legal principles. The emphasis here is to know the law – that means actually committing key cases and legislation to memory. In terms of client interaction, it varies department to department. If there is an opportunity to meet clients or attend conference calls etc – you will be invited. More generally, there are many committees and client events that trainees and associates are encouraged to attend."
