Who are we?
One of the world’s leading healthcare companies, GSK discovers, develops, manufactures and distributes life-saving vaccines, prescription medicines and consumer health products such as Sensodyne, Aquafresh and Panadol.
The size and scope of our organisation allows our people to answer some of the biggest questions facing everyone on the planet – questions about future healthcare needs and questions about building a responsive, innovative, global business to meet them – as well as questions about their own personal and professional growth.
What does a Pharmaceutical materials science industrial placement have to offer?
Pharmaceutical materials science is about understanding and evaluating how materials used for drug, medical device and consumer healthcare products are transformed through manufacturing processes into the final form the patient and/or consumer will use. These materials are typically active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s), pharmaceutical excipients (a substance formulated alongside the active ingredient in a drug product used, e.g. as a diluents, binder, lubricant, drug release modifier) or formulated products (e.g. tablets, creams, ointments).
It is a broad discipline involving both chemical and physical sciences. The GMS Technical Materials Science team use our specialist technical knowledge and advanced / novel physical properties characterisation techniques (such as microscopy, laser diffraction, moisture and gas adsorption, x-ray diffraction, powder flow, spectroscopy, image analysis) to support GMS manufacturing sites to resolve complex problems across the many dose forms/products manufactured by GSK. We also support our manufacturing sites in ensuring we are successful when changing the pharmaceutical materials we use in our formulations.
Whichever role you go into you will be applying the skills you already have and developing new skills such as; team working, effective communication and time management.
