Mechanical Design Engineer
My client specialises in the design and manufacture of physical, optical and acoustic sensors for use in a variety of industry sectors. They are a well-established company with over 50 years’ experience.
They produce sensors for five main markets: sensors to monitor ballast water discharge in the shipping industry; sensors to measure the oceanographic environment including temperature, chlorophyll and bioluminescence; sensors to measure environmental factors such as dye tracing or oil spill monitoring in reservoirs, lakes and rivers; sensors and systems for the Royal Navy, and contamination detection for homeland security purposes; sensors for monitoring and controlling the industrial process, including cleanliness and sanitation, and contamination. My client also designs, develops and manufactures bio-medical systems for the life sciences industry.
The role is for a Mechanical Design Engineer. You will be involved in designing technically advanced sensors which use advanced optical and acoustic instrumentation, working the whole process from concept through to manufacture. You will be working to standard drawing requirements for build control. The role includes prototyping, testing as well as design work. The sizes of the sensors vary considerably, as well as the applications for their use, which makes the work very varied. In addition to design duties, you may be liaising with clients for both product or technical support from time to time, as well as other external parties.
This role offers excellent prospects for career development, with the opportunity to take an increasing level of responsibility for product design and project management. As their client base is international, there may also be some travel involved in the role.
Successful candidates will have a comprehensive knowledge of fundamental engineering principles as well as a natural understanding and flair for the profession. You will be confident having a technical conversation with other engineers and be able to communicate coherently and concisely. You will have experience of producing component and assembly drawings to recognised standard, and be able to demonstrate this.
As part of a relatively small team, you will be able to work closely with a number of different people from different disciplines. I am looking for a candidate who is a team player with a good sense of humour.
