Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service

About Us

Created in April 2017, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) is a new agency in the Ministry of Justice, covering 121 prisons and employing over 42,000 staff. Our mission: to protect the public and rehabilitate people.

The National Probation Service

The National Probation Service (NPS), as part of Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), is a national organisation covering England and Wales.

Our role is to protect the public, support victims and reduce reoffending. Our vision is simple: “Preventing Victims by Changing Lives”.

Our work with offenders is first and foremost about ensuring communities are safe. By providing offenders with the means to rehabilitate, society is better protected against the effects of crime.

Probation Officer opportunities

By managing offenders in the community and in prisons, our Probation Officers protect the public from the effects of crime and give offenders the chance to turn their lives around. No matter your background or level of experience, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference from the moment you begin your training with us.

Probation Officers work closely with people throughout the criminal justice system, victims of crime, charities and the wider community. There are huge challenges in this role, but for the right person, it’s an immensely rewarding career.

What makes us different?

The right person for this role can expect a lot in return. You’ll receive thorough, structured training so you can earn your Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP). You’ll also have support and guidance from the Divisional Training Manager, your line manager and your practice tutor throughout your studies. Once you’re qualified, there will be plenty more opportunities for progression and development.

In addition to a good salary, you’ll join the Local Government Pension Scheme and receive a number of other benefits, including 25 days’ holiday allowance each year (which increases to 30 days after 5 years’ service) plus eight public holidays, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme and Cycle to Work scheme.

While the rewards are certainly attractive, it’s not the only thing you’ll gain from a profession in the probation service. There’s also the sense of achievement you feel when you’ve helped someone get their life back on track. It’s the kind of experience you simply won’t find anywhere else.
