2016

"Most superiors are very accessible and take a lot of time to provide feedback, especially in the first weeks."
First year trainee, Herbert Smith Freehills LLP
"I've not been here particularly long but the partners and associates have been very good at giving feedback so far. I am about to have a one-to-one session with HR on my first seat. We have mid-seat reviews and end-of-seat reviews too. We also have a partner mentor in addition to our supervising partner/senior-associate."
First year trainee, London
"There are numerous levels of mentorship offered from your direct supervisor to the partner mentor to the training partner. At the moment, I haven't had much informal feedback. There has been informal training by other trainees and associates as well as personal assistants in relation to internal processes and systems. There is a formal mentoring meeting scheduled twice every six months but, having said that, supervisors are generally open to going for a coffee or having a chat informally."

"You are allocated a trainee mentor while on the legal practice course and you have a partner mentor once you are in your first seat."
First year trainee, London
"Most of the associates and partners are very keen to help trainees improve and will take the time to teach and mentor them."
First year trainee, London
"Every trainee shares an office with either a senior solicitor or partner supervisor who are happy to answer questions if you get stuck. In addition, every trainee also has another partner mentor in the firm who can give insights into other departments or advice on more general career-related questions. You also have a mid- and end-of-seat review during which you get official feedback. Feedback is also provided on an ongoing basis by the people you work with."
First year trainee, London
"Really accessible: there is always someone willing to have a chat with you or go for a coffee. There are many mentor schemes and supervisors are good at giving feedback."
First year trainee, London
"People have generally gone out of their way to make sure that I get feedback on work I have done well and feedback is always available when you ask. People throughout the firm seem genuinely concerned about my development as a lawyer as well as about getting the task at hand completed."
First year trainee, London

"Solicitors and partners are very accessible. Some supervisors are better than others at giving feedback/teaching, of course, but overall feedback/praise/recognition is good. Partners and more senior lawyers are very good at thanking people for hard work, in my experience."
Second year trainee, London
"I have learnt a ridiculous amount since I started work here. Associates and partners really take the time to sit beside you and walk you through tasks, give you feedback and show you deal structures, etc. I enjoy working in my team - people always make the time to check in and see how you are doing."
First year trainee, London
"We have some strong mentoring programmes and a performance review system which ensures that you are receiving constructive feedback throughout your training contract."
Second year trainee, London
"Solicitors and partners do make an effort to mentor. The Women Lawyers Network in particular is a great initiative/platform."
First year trainee, London
"Supervisors vary but all of mine have been great. People are generally accessible: there is an 'open-door' culture and people often wander in to chat. Feedback is given formally every three months and more frequently informally, and most people are good at giving recognition where it's due."
Second year trainee, London
"All the partners I have met have been very approachable and want to help you improve."

"Fantastic mentoring schemes - trainee buddy, supervisor and partner mentor, plus general support from the team. A Partner took the time to say thank you for my work and send a nice email recognising this and congratulating me, which was rewarding and motivated me to consider qualifying into the group."
First year trainee, London
"You have several mentors during your training contract and it is up to you to what extent you develop a relationship with them."
Second year trainee, London
"I do not get much feedback on a regular basis but solicitors are, on the whole, very accessible and happy to help out."
Second year trainee, Hong Kong
"We receive partner mentors upon starting at the firm however this does not involve very regular contact. Most supervisors and other seniors are approachable though and would be willing to help with any problems or concerns. I think what is missing is a support system to enable you to plan your long-term goals at the firm."
First year trainee, London
"I have had the same partner mentor since my vac scheme. We sit down a few times a year to discuss my options."
Second year trainee, London
"Every trainee gets assigned a Partner mentor at the start of their first seat. Other Partners also mentor you along the way if they like you, but this largely depends on your own relationship with them. Every department has a Trainee Review Partner who keeps check on supervisors, etc. If you do good work this always gets fed back to your supervisor."
Second year trainee, London
"I have been very fortunate so far to have two very open and approachable supervisors. Both took an active interest in my development and were very supportive and, in particular with my current supervisor, quick to pass on positive feedback and encouragement."
First year trainee, London

"Apart from the ritualistic but constructive performance reviews, you have to work hard to get any feedback. But, generally, partners/associates on your team have time for hypothetical questions and story-telling - great experience. Some associates really 'get' mentoring, and spend a lot of time teaching trainees."
First year trainee, London
"I've been very fortunate with my first supervisor, she's been an excellent mentor and role model, very open and approachable. My partner mentor was also friendly and supportive."
First year trainee, London
"My supervisor has been a very good mentor and always offers feedback, and the performance review process is thorough."
First year trainee, London
"The senior lawyers are always pleased to teach and explain, and are among the best people to learn from."
Second year trainee, London
"The appraisal process is very well done. Supervisors don't always have time to train you in a direct way, but they do mark up your work and you will learn a lot by sitting in the same office as them."
Second year trainee, London
