Interview Process

2014

"The process consists of a written application form; situational judgement and reasoning tests; and an assessment day with group exercise, presentation, and interview."
Second year trainee, Hong Kong
"There was an online application process which was followed by a round of psychometric testing. Then there was an assessment day including group activities, a presentation on a commercial scenario and a one-to-one partner interview."
First year trainee, London
"I went through a rigorous interview process for the vacation scheme, including two partner interviews (including one with a case study) and a negotiation."
First year trainee, London
"HSF has a multi-stage assessment process, consisting of online aptitude tests, group interviews, several one-on-one interviews and presentations to partners."
First year trainee, London
"There is a rigorous selection process for the vacation scheme, involving an online application including verbal reasoning and logic-based tests and written competency questions. On the assessment centre, there is a case study, a competency interview and an assessed group discussion. Once you're on the vacation scheme, though, the final training contract interview is very quick and simple."
Second year trainee, London
"Assessment centre plus a three-week vacation scheme and final interview. It was demanding but enjoyable, with lots of different tasks and opportunities to work in groups, as an individual and do work that trainees do."

2013

"I was asked why law (as a non-law graduate with virtually no relevant legal experience). General competency stuff."
First year trainee, London
"The interview process was certainly demanding and it pushed me out of my comfort zone. A lot of the questions which I was asked at interview focused on my commitment to HSF - which I guess is understandable, given that the firm has now made a significant investment in me, as with every other trainee whom it employs. That being said, each member of the interview panel was warm and friendly and put me at ease as much as was possible in that setting."
First year trainee, London
"The interview was very friendly. Questions centred on my motivation to work of the firm and my ability to spot issues and potential risks in a scenario."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked: "Why law?" "Why the subjects and extra-curricular activities you chose?" As well as the interview there was a group exercise, and a case study."
First year trainee, London
"Very important to do a vacation scheme if possible as the majority of trainees are recruited from the there. In the interview you are likely to be asked the normal soft skill questions but you will also be challenged on something more academic and you will need to be prepared to give thoughtful but confident answers."
Second year trainee, London
"Lots of online testing, then those selected go to an assessment day. This involves talking to several partners, working in a group, and also presenting an individual case study to a partner."
