Interview Questions

2015

"In my competency interview I was asked some general commercial questions, but the main thrust of the interview related to my experiences and background."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked why I want to be a lawyer and work for Herbert Smith Freehills in particular. There was also a situational type question along the lines of - imagine you're a partner in [corporate] and a [client] wants to do [deal] so who else in your firm do you get involved?"
Second year trainee, London
"I had done a lot of work experience with smaller, local firms, so I was asked why I wanted to work for Herbert Smith Freehills. I had to tell my interviewer a bit about myself, and was asked about the time when I studied abroad. Questions were very open-ended, so you have space to express yourself but also to venture into irrelevance if you're not careful."
First year trainee, London
"Questions in my interview included providing an example of when you persuaded someone, and an example of how you handled a difficult situation."
First year trainee, London
"Interview questions varied from why I wanted to work in commercial law to why I wanted to work for a City firm, and what I looked to get out of the training contract."
First year trainee, London
"There was a wide range of questions in my interview, from icebreakers about my hobbies to legal and commercial points and general current awareness."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked a lot of questions about my background and why I felt this was the firm for me. There was a gap in my CV that I was asked about."

2014

"There were some 'warm up' questions about my degree course and things I had written on my application form. Then we discussed some of the issues around owning and selling an asset."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked about my motivation for a career in law (particularly as opposed to other graduate professions such as banking or consulting), whether I felt I would fit in at HSF and why. I was also asked what types of work do I think could arise from a certain scenario e.g. a company is looking to diversify into a new industry, what opportunities a recession may provide to a law firm."
First year trainee, London
"I was given some general legal scenarios requiring analysis of issues from a commercial/common sense basis. The case study required thinking through commercial issues. There were no particularly difficult questions regarding commerce or finance."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked some basic questions about financial arrangements in transactions (which I now understand referred to escrow), and competency questions which were followed by a detailed discussion of a case study exercise."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked the normal questions e.g. "Why do you want to be a lawyer", "Why this firm" and "What recent news item have you been following"."
Second year trainee, London
"The competency interview focussed on elements of my application, CV, etc. The commercial scenario interview involved giving a presentation on a fictional scenario and discussing potential commercial/legal issues. My interviews focused more on legal issues, but that may have been because I was a law student."
