I applied to Howard Kennedy as it was recommended to me by a friend who was a client. Client happiness is, at the end of the day, the most important part of a law firm's work and to hear Howard Kennedy's praises sung by a client directly was the best possible selling point. Additionally, they have a great range of specialist sectors, from Retail and Leisure to Sports Individuals; there really is something to interest everyone.
My training contract began in Corporate where I was involved in acquisitions by household names (the hardest bit being not telling all my friends what I was doing!) and was able to play an important role in both the drafting and management of documents and, towards the end of my seat, client relationships. I even stayed on for a couple of days to assist with completion of a deal, as I was so intimately involved with the documents and correspondence.
My second seat in Real Estate Dispute Resolution has been a completely different experience. From almost day one I have had high levels of client contact and responsibility, managing cases with my supervisor and attending meetings and hearings on my own. This department really tested my quick thinking skills with constantly changing situations; there has not been one boring moment! It has given me the opportunity to learn huge amounts in a small space of time, which really is the number one priority for a short six month seat.
My next department will be Real Estate – Retail and Leisure which is going to be completely different again. Howard Kennedy act for some of the biggest names in this sector (and not confidentially!) so it will give me the opportunity to not only learn the intricacies of transactional property, but get involved in the business of some of the most well known restaurant chains in the country.
All in all, my training contract so far has been a great experience. The people are friendly, the offices are beautiful and I am learning more than I could ever have expected.
