In 2013 I joined IBM as a placement student within Human Resources with a specific focus on Student Recruitment. After a successful 12 months, which included working on the IBM Wimbledon team and time spent in IBM’s New York Head office, I decided to reapply back to the Graduate Scheme. My application was successful and I re-joined IBM’s Analytics Sales Unit.

At present I am in an operational role within the team to support the senior leaders and first line managers. Although this role is not customer facing, it has provided me with invaluable insight into how the business runs at not only a UK level, but globally too. I have been in this role for 12 months and have gained a plethora of skills and experiences from the senior team, however I am now hoping to gain experience in a more customer facing sales role. To help with this progression, I was enrolled onto the IBM Global Sales School – this is a highly regarded training programme, which not only prepares you on how to sell, but it gives graduates the confidence to meet clients face to face and close deals. This extensive training taught me a huge amount and it was a particular highlight of my experience in IBM as I successfully achieved the highest mark in the class.

IBM takes investment into graduate training extremely seriously, and I have attended several courses aimed at developing not only my product knowledge but also my softer skills, such as leadership training. One development course, which I particularly enjoyed took place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. This training was aimed at developing skills such as leadership, team work and followership. This was a real highlight as we were given a small insight into the life of a British Army Officer, which was an inspiring leadership story.

In addition to the excellent training, IBM provides many other benefits such as flexible working, countless opportunities internally and great colleagues. IBM is a large organisation with a diverse workforce, which means the career opportunities are endless. The varied range of roles and locations twinned with a great mix of people, who are always happy to help, makes this a company that I endeavour to progress and succeed in.
