innocent grassroots graduate scheme


Here at innocent we want to become the best little place in Europe to build your career. To help us we’ve created the innocent grassroots scheme, giving graduates the chance to experience how different bits of our business work. As a grassroots graduate, you’ll be given real responsibility from day one and the opportunity to make your mark and add value in each of your placements, helping you to develop as a potential future leader at innocent.

If you get onto the scheme, you’ll spend time working in three key areas of the business to gain a broad understanding of how our various teams work together to make and sell our drinks.

By the end, you should have a really good idea of what makes innocent tick and be in a better position to decide which area of our business you’d like to explore next, as we’re keen to grow our talent internally from the grassroots up.

So how does it work?

Grassroots is a three year scheme starting in July 2017.

We are offering three 12 month placements each in a different area of the business. In 2017, we think there will be 3 positions up for grabs - but that could change.

What will I be doing?

In your first year, you might find yourself working as a Regional Development Executive (RDE) in our commercial team. You’ll be on the front line of our sales force, hitting the streets selling smoothies and juices to coffee shops and small retailers.

Then, once you’re a guru on all our products and customers, you’ll move into an office based role. This is likely to be in our supply teams, planning and forecasting the production cycle to make sure our drinks are made at the right time and in the right quantities.

Then, in your final year, you'll have options. We’ll sit down with you to work out what your ambitions and dreams are, and we’ll do our best to make them happen. We can’t promise you’ll always get what you want, (there has to be a role available in the business) but we’ll always try to accommodate if we can. We’re big in Europe now so if you fancied working in one of our regions (sorry, not the Maldives) then that could be possible (no promises though).

We’d love to be able to guarantee specific roles, but we just can’t I’m afraid. But, we’re a growing European business so you can be sure that you’ll get three meaty and challenging roles that will give you the chance to shine, develop your expertise across a number of areas and make the best possible contribution to the business (and have some fun along the way too).

Throughout your placements, you’ll have regular 121 catch-ups with your manager and attend our Specialist Learning and Development programmes. When you start, you’ll be buddied with our current graduates who will help you settle into life at Fruit Towers as well as share their own experiences of their first year at innocent. After six months, you’ll receive a grassroots champion who will act as your mentor to provide some stellar coaching on how to perform well at innocent.


What are we looking for in our grassroots candidates?

  • Postgraduate or placement experience – if you’ve already cut your teeth in the business world we’d love to hear about it. Experience in FMCG or one of the areas involved in the scheme would be the cherry on top.
  • innocent capabilities - we find that people who do really well at innocent tend to have strengths in specific areas. You can find out what they are on our careers site.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills - we work with a lot of numbers, so you’ll need to be comfortable manipulating and analysing data in our systems, including Excel.
  • Flexibility and commitment - you’ll need to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into a variety of jobs on the scheme, and we’ll expect you to approach every task with the same enthusiasm and commitment.
  • A strong academic record - in our experience, people who excel in these kinds of roles have studied numbers-based disciplines.
  • Willingness to travel. Depending on your placements, this could be the feet on the street as a Regional Development Executive or, if you’re up for it, an international role in one of our other regions
  • Working proficiency in either French or German would be a real bonus

Reward: Grassroots graduates will start on £26,000 and will qualify for an individual bonus plan each year. We will also offer an additional performance related bonus at the end of each placement.

What will the recruitment process look like?
Shortlisted candidates will join a three stage process, including a video interview, a short follow up competency based call and a group assessment centre. First round selection will take place December - January and if you make it through to our final 20, you’ll be invited to one of our Grassessment Days on 8th and 10th February 2017.

Is grassroots like Top Gun; only for the best of the best?
At innocent we aim to recruit the best of the best at all times. Grassroots simply offers a different path to build your career. If you’re undecided where you want to specialise in your career, or see yourself progressing into a general management role in the future, this could be a good option for you.

What happens at the end of the scheme?
At the end of the scheme you’ll have the opportunity to apply for available vacancies throughout innocent. With experience in a number of key areas of the business, there should be a variety of options for what you do next.

What if I get half way through and decide it’s not for me?
The idea is that you get to experience all three areas of the business, so we’re looking for people who are fully committed to all placements and are dedicated to the entire three years of the scheme.

Is this my only chance to apply?
No – we expect to recruit new people on to the scheme annually. In 2016 there will be three positions available.

Why is each placement one year long?
In our experience, having a 12 month placement means that you can show us what you’re capable of and that you can really nail your role. In the first 6 months you’ll be settling into a new job with a new team and then you’ll have the opportunity to really add some value and go the extra mile in the last 6 months of your role.

How much would i have to travel?
This depends on your placement. Some roles require you being out and about as the feet on the street, e.g. Regional Development Executive. For others, you won’t be required to travel as your role will be based in the office. And if you’re really lucky and up for the challenge, we’ll offer you a role in one of our other regions so we’ll want to you be flexible and open minded when it comes to working abroad.
