(based on 15 ratings in 2016)

2016

"The work has all been very interesting and busy with a lot of client contact throughout."
First year trainee, Bristol
"A lot of high-quality work, client contact and responsibility. You feel that you are trusted by seniors and are a valuable member of the team."
First year trainee, London
"A lot depends on the team that you are in. In some teams I will be drafting instructions to counsel and complex letters to clients, as well as attending client meetings and hearings. In others I will be arranging conferences, chasing medical records and contacting experts. Although these are beneficial skills, it is helpful for this to be coupled with more complex tasks."
First year trainee, Manchester
"In real estate I got a lot of responsibility and did quite a lot of technical drafting. In banking, the more technical work goes to those with more experience but I do get a lot of transaction responsibility, such as liaising with the client and other parties. The work is of a good standard."
First year trainee, London
"My role typically includes attending court once per week, drafting letters and being the primary contact point for clients."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"This really varies from team to team. The good thing about Irwin Mitchell is that you will always have an active role as a trainee and you really do get a decent haul of the work. One issue is that you may not always feel as supervised as you might want."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the work. On a day-to-day basis I communicate with clients and other solicitors. I am involved in numerous matters and the tasks I carry out range from preparing reports to drafting documents to completing land registry applications."
First year trainee, Chichester
"As a trainee in my first seat, I have been very impressed with the quality of work I am getting. On a day-to-day basis I am always working on various client matters and I often communicate with them directly either by email, letter or over the phone. This has improved my written and verbal correspondence. Of course there is some admin, but this is to be expected at an early stage. As time has gone on and I have gained the trust of my colleagues, I have been encouraged to delegate admin tasks to the support team. I have also been given the opportunity to undertake some research tasks, which have helped me gain a better understanding of the practice area I am working in, having had no previous experience in it."
First year trainee, Newbury

"There is lots of client interaction in my work in the firm. I found that the partners involve you in work from an early stage, and want to hear your opinion. You are pushed by your team to develop and learn."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I have a high level of client interaction, and run my own management files with supervision. I am given a good level of responsibility at work, and deal with clients directly on a daily basis. I have also been able to attend numerous business development events, and have been tasked with organising them on a few occasions as well."
Second year trainee, London
"I enjoy my role, the firm allows you to do as much or as little business development as you wish, and client interaction is good. Within one month of your seat you will be trusted to interact with clients, providing that you understand the basics of the transaction. My day-to-day responsibilities vary: I could be running with files, meeting deadlines and/or looking after legal work placements."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"My work is satisfying as it enables me to interact with clients on a daily basis, often meeting with them or witnesses on my own. I do a range of work: attending meetings, drafting witness statements, drafting letters, interacting with counsel and experts, and research."
First year trainee, Manchester
"The firm has a strong view that trainees should be working at the coalface, and not just playing support roles from behind the scenes, which makes for satisfying work. Where it is appropriate trainees are encouraged to take on more responsibility and engage with clients."
First year trainee, Leeds
"You are generally given a large amount of client contact, but this can vary depending on the team. You are treated as a fee earner early on into your seat, and there are high expectations of your work throughout."
Second year trainee, London
"Although my work has varied depending on the seat that I am in, such as when I was assigned more admin-type tasks in family law, I found client interaction in Court of Protection and serious injury to be very high quality work."
First year trainee, Leeds

2014

"Lots of client interaction - I was on the phone and sending emails from day one. I have been allowed to manage (with supervision) various files, expected to make decisions about progression of the matters and be involved with each stage."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"I have been submerged in high quality work from the beginning of my training contract which has provided me with ample opportunity to engage with clients and experience a variety of different legal scenarios from conference with counsel and high court attendances to round the table meetings and deal completion. My day-to-day responsibilities have varied since the start of my training contract although fundamental to this has been the opportunity to develop not only my legal skills, but also my communication and client care skills as well."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I have had a lot of client interaction, more so in certain seats, although overall it has been good. My day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on which seat I have been in, but in general they are interesting and varied."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I am given plenty of work to do but am not swamped. I also have constant client interaction and feel very well supported both at a senior level and from support staff."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I have great client exposure, good quality work, great training, supervisors who really care about your development."
Second year trainee, London
"I have some client interaction, mainly via telephone and email. I have varied amounts of responsibility and autonomy, depending upon who I am working for."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I love my role. I already have my own case load of 30 cases and I assist an associate with her cases as well. I am given a lot of responsibility but I am supported in fulfilling my role. I get a lot of client interaction and do all the tasks a solicitor would."
Second year trainee, London
"I have been surprised at the level of responsibility I have been given as a trainee. This is a great hands on place to train where you are encouraged to become actively involved in the firm's work and I have been encouraged at every turn."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I have had a lot of client interaction. I interview clients for witness statements, I have attended inquests unsupervised and I deal with client phone calls directly. I am well supported and my role at each stage has been clearly defined."
First year trainee, Leeds
