A Career as a Patent Attorney

This profession represents an intellectually challenging and rewarding career option that offers scope to develop and apply your scientific knowledge. It brings together a unique blend of science, law and business skills.

If you join J A Kemp for a career as a patent attorney we will provide:

  • The advantage of a leading firm: our reputation, our client base, our breath and depth of technical expertise and our collective knowledge of intellectual property law
  • The combination of a first-class training and personal development programme with early responsibility for producing high quality work and service to our clients
  • The benefits of a caring and responsible employer: a sensible approach to work-life balance, combined with excellent salary prospects, generous benefits, flexible working and a commitment to caring for the environment
  • A supportive, open and friendly culture, with social events throughout the year.

We normally recruit five or six Trainee Patent Attorneys each year. We usually encourage our trainees to start with us in the autumn, in a recognised peer group, though we are flexible about start dates. We require, in addition to at least 360 UCAS points, a minimum of a 2.1 honours degree in a scientific or technical subject, preferably physics, engineering, chemistry or biosciences. We are open to applications from candidates holding or studying for a bachelors, masters or PhD degree.

We encourage applications before the end of the calendar year for candidates who wish to start the following autumn. We will, however, consider applications from exceptional candidates at any time of the year.
