My first summer placement was July 2011, my second was in summer 2012, and then I officially joined as a staff graduate in July 2013.

I took part in an Engineering Education Scheme during my first year of sixth form. I was working with two chemical engineers which allowed me to learn more about the engineering industry and chemical engineering in particular. I really enjoyed this work and decided that my next step would be a degree in Chemical Engineering with oil and gas technology from Heriot Watt University.

During my degree I worked two 3 – 4 month summer placements with Jacobs at Westlakes, they then offered me a job with sponsorship for my final year.

My current placement is in a client design office working on the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP) Retrievals projects at Sellafield Limited. My daily work includes calculations, drawings and documentation. Some aspects of the project are at a manufacturing and testing stage which has allowed me to gain more hands on experience.

The great thing about the Jacobs’ Graduate Programme is the variety. The technical work is great but also beyond this, I am involved with the Jacobs Inclusion Programme, Jacobs Futures Network, STEM activities and the local training and development committee. This gives me a good mix of non-technical objectives to work on every week. This breadth is what really attracted me to Jacobs.

The next step for me is to complete my Graduate Development Programme and to then work towards becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer with the IChemE.

Jacobs is a great company to work for – they look after their employees, provide amazing opportunities and are flexible in their approach. I’m looking forward to the next stage of my career at Jacobs and beyond.
