Types of work
Our 200 London-based lawyers collaborate within the U.K. and across our worldwide offices, to guide clients through the most demanding and complex global matters, including cross-border M&A, real estate, and finance transactions (including banking, capital markets, investment funds, private equity and structured finance); global disputes, and regulatory issues involving the U.K., U.S., and other authorities. Jones Day’s London lawyers also have extensive experience in business restructuring, competition/antitrust, corporate tax planning, employment and pensions, energy, intellectual property, and projects and infrastructure.
In our rare and distinctive non-rotational training system, you will seek and receive work from all departments at the same time, to provide flexibility, responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. Because you won’t move department every six months, you won’t miss the end of deals or trials you have worked on. Work will vary from small cases which you may handle alone (under the supervision of a senior lawyer) to larger matters where you will assist a partner or an associate solicitor. The Firm runs a structured seminar programme to support the practical teaching you will receive from associates and partners with whom you work. A rotating six month secondment to Dubai for one trainee is also available.
These reflect the importance Jones Day attaches to the trainee role as well as the trainees’ contribution to the Firm’s business. Current (2018) salary rates and benefits (for indicative purposes and subject to changes or increases in line with the Firm’s annual salary review policy) are shown below:
Trainee Start: £50,000
12 months: £57,000
24 months (on qualification): £105,000
Who should apply
As leaders in cross-border M&A and global disputes, we look for extraordinary individuals who are committed to a legal career; want to be challenged on an international platform; and can become part of our future – not just qualify with us. Around half of our London partners trained with the Firm. Successful candidates have a minimum 2.1 degree in any discipline, strong intellectual and analytical ability, good communication skills, and demonstrate resourcefulness, drive and dedication. 60% of our current trainees are non-law graduates and 35% were graduates/ postgraduates when they applied to us.
Key application information
We mainly recruit through our placement schemes in the Winter, Spring and Summer vacations; but sometimes will make exceptions for those who are unable to complete them. To apply for a training contract, apply for a placement scheme. Applications for our 2018/2019 placement schemes are open from 1 September 2018 to 10 January 2019. Whilst we are currently recruiting for Training Contracts with start dates for September 2021, we may see fit to recruit into intakes with earlier start dates if places are available and suitable candidates are identified who can start sooner. We recruit on a rolling basis and cannot guarantee availability, so apply early. All our schemes are open to final year undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates and career changers from any degree discipline; and to penultimate year undergraduates undertaking a qualifying law degree.
