"The average is 9.30 am to 7.30 pm with a couple of late nights each week. There's absolutely no pressure to stay later than 5.30 pm if you have nothing to do."
First year trainee, London
"I have had periods in which I don't leave the office until after midnight every day for a few weeks. On the other hand, there have been several months where leaving at 6.00 pm is the norm."

"The work hours can be long if a matter is urgent. If things are quiet nobody expects you to stay around."
Second year trainee, London
"This varies. I am usually in the office for 9.00 am and leave at 7.00 pm."

"It depends on which partner you are working for but most appreciate that you have a life outside of work. Some are not always as good at this as others."
First year trainee, London
"The hours are flexible and the non-rotational system really does count on you to manage your own time."

"The hours are variable and it will very much depend on what I am working on. However, as law firms go, the hours are pretty good and I will often be out of the office by 7.00 pm. The firm is very flexible when it comes to hours so long as the work is done. I personally prefer to come in early and leave early. As our computers are laptops, I will sometimes leave the office early and then continue at home on my laptop."
First year trainee, London
"For the most part, hours are flexible as long as you get your work done."
First year trainee, London
"As a trainee, flexibility on working from home is very limited (acceptable only at weekends). What's more, hours can be long when transactions are reaching their conclusion. That said, I do think the hours are good as there is no face-time culture and there is little culture of creating work for trainees, which means that you are almost always doing things that are actively contributing to the transaction."
Second year trainee, London
"They're standard for a City firm: I leave at around 7.30 pm on a good day. Sometimes, when a deadline is approaching, you are asked to work longer hours."
