"I have had far more drafting and client contact work than I would ever have expected in the first six months of a training contract. By completing the more traditional trainee roles well, I feel I have been entrusted with more interesting, rewarding tasks."

"I've been lucky to work on some really good quality matters. Trainees generally get a lot of responsibility and their input is always appreciated. Client interaction depends on the project and team sizes, but you are usually invited to attend client meetings and calls etc on most projects you work on."

"Lots of client interaction, you often find yourself liaising directly with clients. Depending on the size of the deal you will often be given a huge amount of responsibility."

"We get good interaction with other offices and clients very early on in our training contract. We are definitely expected to use our initiative and pick up the phone or send an email to get something done. Some departments, such as real estate, are naturally better for this than others, such as litigation, where it is more likely that drafts of anything leaving the firm first need to be approved, or often sent, by someone other than a trainee."

"In my first three weeks I worked directly with a partner on an M&A deal and became the client contact at first instance for all post-completion matters. I was given an amazing level of autonomy to use my judgement in dealing with practical matters and it meant I learned a lot. I have also had amazing levels of experience and responsibility in larger deals when you are liaising directly with the client on a specific area."

"A good amount of client interaction (client calls and emails etc), a good amount of drafting in litigation and client management role (ie liaising with local counsel) in corporate."

"You get however much you can handle. The system naturally rewards good work. When you do a good job, people come back to you, you have earned their trust. That doesn't just mean more work, it means more exciting, meatier work. When you're able to show that you have the determination and the ability to serve the clients in the same way that the partners seek to, that's valued, nurtured. So it's not so much a question of what kind of work we 'get' to do, and more a question of how much of yourself you're willing to put into the work in order to be doing the kind of work you want to be doing."
