"All of the partners I have worked with have been approachable and happy to assist you and share their knowledge. We have mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisals with our supervisor so have formal meetings where we are given feedback every three months during our training. This is important as it gives you the opportunity to set objectives and work on them."
First year trainee, London
"Solicitors are always available and willing to share their experience and advice. We have very useful trainee appraisals every three months that involve input from people you have worked with. It's always very useful and encouraging. I have received praise for my work, which has been appreciated."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"Some solicitors take you under their wings and give you great guidance. It's what you make of it that counts. There's not much in the way of a formal mentoring programme though."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"People are generally very willing to help you and discuss your development. The solicitors are keen to give trainees good experiences to learn from."
First year trainee, London
"This varies very much from team to team. The solicitors and partners in my current team are very good at giving feedback and offering advice."
First year trainee, London
"I think mentoring in regional departments could be much better, adding a buddy system would be a good start."
Second year trainee, London
"Supervisors are usually very approachable and legal secretaries are often willing to help. You do have to actively seek the work you are interested in, though."
First year trainee, London
"Both solicitors and partners are very accessible and always happy to help with queries or concerns. There are mid- and end-of-seat reviews to support the ongoing supervision."

"The partners and solicitors are all approachable and give good feedback on work I've done."
First year trainee, London
"Almost all training is completed through doing the work but sometimes I've found people can be quite quiet when it comes to giving feedback. Other solicitors here are extremely friendly and partners are approachable with any questions."
First year trainee, London
"I've had a very supportive supervisor. Everybody is always happy to help you. We have mid-seat and end-of-seat reviews, meaning we get eight across the two years."
First year trainee, London
"The senior solicitors and partners are very accessible and always willing to give feedback or help you sort out a problem."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The partners are very easy to talk to and always willing to take time to listen to any concerns that you may have. Similarly, so are the solicitors. There is a review midway through each seat of the training contract."
First year trainee, Manchester
"It can vary depending on your supervisor. You will work for certain people more than others and take their comments on board. Feedback could be provided more often as I have sometimes had to chase for it."
First year trainee, London
"Trainees are allocated a mentor who is available to assist you with any queries or concerns. The partners are also frequently available and will always make time to run through things with you. We also have annual appraisals."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"There's a lot of assistance on hand. Supervisors give good advice and are never too busy to answer questions. Partners in the Cambridge office are excellent – very approachable and hands on."

"From my experience partners are approachable at any time, as are solicitors and other members of staff."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"The solicitors and partners are all extremely accessible and are all more than happy to help. They will always take the time to explain what they would like you to do and to provide feedback on any work that you have completed for them. I regularly receive praise for my work and my contributions to the team as a whole."
Second year trainee, Sheffield
"My last supervisor was very thorough in thinking through the impact of work on my career path which was so refreshing. A partner praised my work to the client on a completion deal."
First year trainee, London
"Obviously there is some variety, but in every team I have found solicitors/partners who take a genuine interest in developing you, and who take the time to explain issues to you properly."
Second year trainee, London
"In each seat trainees get a supervisor - mine have all been great and I am convinced that they show a real interest in helping you to develop."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Every trainee has a supervisor and you have mid- and end-of-seat reviews. However, everyone is very approachable, and will always give you feedback if requested."

"The firm have an 'open-door' policy; we have an open-plan office where I sit with my team, so I just have to pop my head over my desk and the partner or other team members are there to help."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I work closely with a supervisor and partner who are both very approachable and helpful."
First year trainee, Taunton
"This depends on the department you are working in. I find that generally if you submit a piece of work and don't hear anything, that's a good sign. If there is room for improvement then the solicitor concerned will let you know."
First year trainee, London
"Training and mentoring varies from team to team - some are very hands on with your training, whilst others prefer to let you get on with and refine it later. Feedback, when received, is generally constructive and helps you to develop, rather than just pointing out why what you did was incorrect."
Second year trainee, London
"My supervisor is great, as are the other fee-earners who sit around me. If I have any queries they are more than happy to help me out. Fee earners have also been great with sitting me down and giving me feedback on work I have conducted so far."
First year trainee, London
"The offices are open-plan, so you learn a lot of soft skills from observing. People are also very keen to impart knowledge and give advice."
First year trainee, London
