When did you join Finmeccanica?
I first joined the company as an industrial placement student, in the hardware department, between the second and third years of my degree. Upon completion of my degree in 2015, I returned as a graduate hardware engineer.
What are your main tasks as a Graduate Hardware Engineer?
My tasks as a graduate hardware engineer vary depending on who and what I am working on. I’m currently working in a team, which means I have to undertake a large range of tasks including firmware work, hardware testing, and trouble-shooting a range of other issues.
Tell us about a typical day?
My typical day normally starts around 8 to 8:30 am. I start my day my checking emails and chasing up anything I have left testing or running overnight, and getting on with a range of tasks from there. I’m currently involved in several other non-project work activities, such as working with schools or helping with site visits which take up some of my time.
Are you involved in related activities outside your specific job role?
I’m a STEM ambassador and work with a local school providing a link between ourselves and them. I typically visit the school once a week and assist a group of A-level students in an Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering (EESE) challenge, which the company sponsors. Along with weekly visits to the school, I also organise visits to the company site, work experience, and several other activities to engage students in engineering and allow them to gain an insight into the real world of work. I find the role extremely rewarding and enjoy seeing students develop and grow!
What do you enjoy about working at Leonardo?
I find the work at Finmeccanica interesting and challenging, and the opportunity to work on complex, cutting-edge systems very exciting. The people at Finmeccanica are friendly and keen to see you develop as a person. Aside from the engineering work that the graduate scheme offers, there are great opportunities to develop your personal skill set and many opportunities to grow within the business.
