I applied to LSEG after attending a networking event during my final year at university. Most people know about London Stock Exchange and what it does, but I was surprised at just how broad and diversified the wider Group is. I liked the fact that the graduate programme offered exposure to all of these different businesses and markets.
My first rotation was with the Risk Management division at LCH. The company is a key part of LSEG’s Post Trade business. One of my main responsibilities was to help produce and update quantitative risk models in order to make margin calculations. This is the amount of capital each market participant is required to deposit with a clearing house like LCH in order to book a trade.
It was a big step up from anything I’d been used to at university. I was working with complex risk models; the data was constantly changing and I needed to be extremely quick with my calculations. Fortunately, the people around me were very supportive and always on hand to offer help or to answer questions. By the end of the rotation I had developed a really strong understanding of how the post trade industry works.
I’m now working with the Capital Markets business. My time is split between the Fixed Income and ETF teams, who help customers to raise finance through the financial markets. My workday is extremely varied: one minute I could be working on research and data analysis, the next I could be preparing presentations for our clients or helping to answer customer queries.
Finance is such a broad industry; the Group is constantly expanding and there are so many things I could potentially do here over the next few years. I really enjoy interacting with clients and having to think on my feet on the phone or in meetings. As a Mandarin speaker I’d like the opportunity to work with Chinese clients at some stage, either in the UK or possibly even overseas. I think this is an area where I could really add value.
