London Stock Exchange Group

Working in finance has been an ambition of mine for a number of years, and I was heavily involved in finance and investment societies right the way through school and university. Everything I’d read about the financial markets highlighted how important technology is becoming in driving the future of the industry, and this played a big part in me choosing to apply to LSEG.

My first rotation was with ELITE Club Deal (ECD), which is LSEG’s new private placement platform designed to streamline and standardise the capital raising process for companies in the ELITE programme (which, in turn, helps ambitious private companies to develop and become more ready to raise capital). ECD/ELITE is an immensely innovative and entrepreneurial arm of the Group.

I joined the ECD team whilst they were in one of the most important phases of developing the platform and preparing to introduce its beta version to the market. It was a fascinating experience – I was working closely with both start-ups and investors, learning about what’s involved in growing a business and the role of the financial markets in this process.

I’ve since moved over to the Corporate Finance team, which is responsible for overseeing all of LSEG’s merger and acquisition (M&A) activities. The team’s core function is to manage the Group’s inorganic expansion by exploring opportunities to acquire other businesses, or by selling businesses that we already hold. A lot of my work involves financial modelling to gain a better understanding of these opportunities and the value they could potentially bring to the business. The role is very analytical as it involves evaluating a wide range of different companies and scenarios and then reporting my findings back to the rest of the team.

Having the ability to speak to different people across the Group has given me a far better technical understanding of inter-company projects and how the financial markets work. I’ve also been able to develop my soft skills, and I feel like I’ve grown in confidence since the start of the graduate programme, particularly when it comes to working with senior people. It’s all about having confidence in your own views and being able to put your point across clearly.
