Formal Training

8.9 / 10

"Excellent across all departments. Very intensive lunchtime sessions, which are front-loaded for each seat and act as practical refreshers for law school knowledge, are intermingled with real-life transactions/cases. This is kept up throughout all levels of associates, with tailored courses to enable further improvement. Also, frequent departmental updates on law and relevant issues."

"We have lots of formal training sessions in each seat to broadly cover the main types of work you'll get. These are often run by senior individuals so they can answer all of your questions."

"Each department has a structured seminar programme at the start of every seat, which is generally quite detailed and focused on typical trainee work in that department."

"Fantastic training programmes tailored for each department. Communicating with clients by email has been a key non-legal skill that I've picked up."

"Formal training sessions are front-loaded, with up to six weeks of lunchtime sessions in certain departments. Ultimately, you learn on the job and the work that trainees are given tends to be of high quality."
Second year trainee, London
"Sessions were conducted among other trainees in each department, led by an associate. Additionally, the relatively small size of the firm's deal teams gave a lot of opportunity for 'on the job' experience."

"Training is generally excellent, with a large amount of trainee-specific training front-loaded in each seat and ongoing learning and development (with opportunities for trainees to speak). There are also a number of optional skills sessions involving external speakers/experts that can be very useful. These include talks from barristers, debate training, and legal writing training."

"Very good across the board. Each department puts in a lot of hours. There's an increasing amount of 'soft skills' sessions being added."
Second year trainee, London
"Each department provides its own subject-specific training. Fee earners give interactive seminars. I have picked up many legal and non-legal skills, though my attention to detail and legal drafting have seen the most marked improvement."

"A training programme is provided in each department. There is also training in the firm while on the Legal Practice Course which is good."
Second year trainee, London
"There are formal seminars in each seat covering the foundations of that department, and they are good for getting a grasp on the basics. The best training comes from informal Q&As; with associates/partners and, of course, from what you pick up in day-to-day work. There is a big focus on drafting and client-care, but non-legal skills include communication and negotiation."

"In each department/rotation trainees receive morning or lunchtime training sessions over and above their 'actual work' which is really useful to contextualise what you are working on. It is also helpful to receive such training where there are certain topics that you have not yet encountered in practice."
First year trainee, London
"There is a detailed training programme at the start of each seat in relation to the area of law/types of work you will do in that seat. The quality and relevance of the training depends on how big the department is. A lot of importance is placed on this training."
First year trainee, London
"There are excellent programmes of training in each department. Hours and hours of seminars are delivered by senior lawyers."
First year trainee, London
"Training at the firm is excellent. Frequent seminars and talks are not only for trainees but department-wide as well. External speakers and internal speakers from within your department and different departments give updates and interesting talks. There is an intensive trainee training programme that teaches you core skills within in each department."

"We have training almost every day in some departments. I think it is an excellent training programme which is comprehensive in scope and ensures that you are left feeling confident."
First year trainee, London
"I honestly believe that we are trained more thoroughly than any other trainees in the City. We have a weekly training session focussing on legal technical knowledge and plenty of seminars on soft skills and legal updates."
Second year trainee, London
"There are lots of people here to support and guide us. We are closely monitored and I've been asked what kind of areas I'm interested in so that my experience can be tailored to it."
First year trainee, London
"We have excellent trainee seminars focussing on relevant areas of law, practical sessions on drafting, practical sessions on using the software relevant for each department, and forums with the entire department outlining recent developments in the law."
First year trainee, London
"The firm offers refresher courses for LPC and skills training for general legal practice."
First year trainee, London
"I have been attending daily training seminars which aim not only to improve us as M and A lawyers, but also to introduce us to the work of other departments and demonstrate how the different departments interact with one another. In addition, the firm has held general trainee seminars to further familiarise new trainees with the informal aspects of the firm, as well as with important things like the pension scheme."
First year trainee, London
"We are constantly having training sessions within our departments on legal updates. Additionally, we have business training, such as training on how to pitch and build relationships from in-house counsel."
Second year trainee, London
"We receive a high number of focused training sessions throughout trainee period, and the training week before starting focused on learning firm infrastructure basics. We have the ability to discuss specific issues with partners and senior associates."
