I was attracted to the Talent stream of the Graduate Program at Mercer as it presented a great opportunity to work in consulting with a specific human capital focus. This was a topic in which I had become interested at university, having undertaken modules in Organisational Analysis and Employment Relations. The application process involved an initial video interview, an assessment centre in the London office and then a final interview with two Partners at the firm.

For the first few days of the job we were sent on a residential course for all the new graduates starting at Mercer, which was held at a hotel in Warwick. Here we had the chance to meet the other graduates we’d be working with and also those from other departments and offices. We were given training about Mercer in general, such as their values and how the different business functions work. We also received training specific to the business line we’d be joining, to give us some insight into what was to come.

After this I began work in the London office, which has a great location overlooking Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. The team was really welcoming, and as one of four new graduates, it was great not to be the only one on my first day! The majority of training has been on the job, and because we have been invited to get involved on pitches and client projects as they arise, we have been able to get stuck in right from the start. One of the great things about Talent at Mercer is the breadth of consulting work that we do, which gives us the opportunity to try out a wide range of different types of work and projects. For example I have simultaneously been supporting on projects in executive remuneration, leadership and employee engagement.

Another aspect about working for Mercer that I really enjoy is that as a large multinational organisation, they attract some great clients and personally I find it really rewarding to be working for household names. Additionally, as an expert in employee health and benefits, Mercer is extremely good at rewarding and valuing their employees and offers a great flexible benefits package.

Overall I have really enjoyed working at Mercer so far, and look forward to learning and gaining more experience as I progress through the graduate program!
