Scientific Software Engineer Industrial Placements 2019

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with IT Professionals alongside 500 world leading Weather and Climate Scientists, developing our Scientific technical capabilities enabling our science to advance.

Why should I choose the Met Office?

As an Industrial Placement at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,000 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2019 - July 2020) working with a team developing and supporting scientific software infrastructure within Applied, Climate, Foundation or Weather Science; for example, air quality, satellite applications or models of the atmosphere or ocean. Working alongside 500 world leading Weather and Climate scientists, you will gain valuable experience and absorb information from IT professionals all of which will help develop your skills and help you put what you have learnt at University into practice. 

You will be joining other placements on this scheme and past cohorts have supported each other with projects, set up lunch groups and socials.

Tell me a little more about what you do….

Through world-leading science and cutting-edge technology, we work together to question the ordinary every day because we believe in the best. Working with global partners, our IT projects reach as far as Space.  Around the clock, around the world, people need to know more about how the weather and climate will affect them now and in the future. Scientists within the Met Office working with software engineers carry out a broad range of research which underpins all our products and services. From weather and ocean forecasting to climate prediction, our research and development teams are at the forefront of scientific research. Software engineering is key in our science. Our science enables industries to operate, aircraft to take off and land safely, and helps Governments to make key choices.

Can I apply? 

To become an SSE Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who: 
1. Is studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant numeracy, science (mathematics or a physical science) and/or IT element which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course). 
2. Possesses knowledge of at least one programming language 
3. Has a keen interest in IT and software engineering at scale to support science and keeps up to date with current and future IT developments 
4. Has effective analytical and problem-solving skills 
5. Can plan and organise work using their own initiative 
6. Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills 

Desirably, you would be someone who can also demonstrate:

1. An understanding of modern software engineering processes and methods 
2. A proven ability to work well as a member of a team 
3. Evidence of putting your programming skills into practice 
4. Interest in data science and machine learning approaches

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?

We will be accepting applications until Sunday 31st March. During this time, we may get in touch if you are unfortunately not eligible or we have spotted something missing from your application. Otherwise, you can expect to hear from us around the 8th April once the hiring manager has reviewed all the applications received. We often receive a high number of applications so it can take a little while to look at each one but we always let people know the outcome. 

Interviews will be held at our headquarters in Exeter around the 22nd April and further information of the next stage in the process will be provided if you are shortlisted.
