"The culture at M&R is extremely collegiate. Everyone is friendly, approachable and willing to help. As a trainee, this provides for an excellent training environment. As trainees, we work closely alongside partners and other senior members of staff who are always accessible if you need any help. The work/life balance is excellent and the firm really encourages trainees to get involved in as many extra-curricular activities as possible, including the firm's various sports teams and Junior Lawyers Division. The teams I've worked in so far have all regularly socialised outside of the office, which is a good way of getting to know colleagues."

"Most days I work 9.00 am to 6.00 pm and take an hour lunch up in our sixth floor canteen. The social life here at M&R is great. I'm always doing something in the evenings. This varies from netball to networking or just socialising with fellow trainees."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"While there is a hierarchy within the office in terms of there being partners, principal associates, senior associates etc, this is not enforced excessively. The atmosphere within our office is extremely friendly and helpful – the open-plan layout adds to this – and partners are generally just as keen to provide trainees with work and supply useful feedback as any other member of staff. We have a social committee that organises various activities outside the office such as sports (we have a netball team and a cricket team, for instance), bingo and even a spring party!"
Second year trainee, Norwich
"There is a very flat structure at M&R. The partners do not have their own offices and instead sit among their teams. They are very approachable and friendly. We have a very collaborative culture and socialising between colleagues is encouraged."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Lack of hierarchy and open-plan working environment. Made to feel welcome and part of the team at every seat move. There is a social committee, which organises numerous events throughout the year, including payday drinks every month, theatre trips, quizzes etc."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"People are friendly and approachable. We are completely open plan and it is easy to go up to partners if you have questions. Socialising varies from team to team and office to office, but there is always socialising there if you want it."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"In the office, there is a very positive atmosphere. People make themselves available at all levels, and it's a place where people enjoy the work they do and enjoy the company of those they work with. The open plan system helps, but more critical are the people within the office. Outside of work, perhaps there could be more socialising, but there's a fair amount of events to encourage people to get to know one another outside of work."

"There is a collaborative culture and generally the hierarchical structure works well. Some teams socialise more than others but most teams head out to our local every so often for a catch-up. There are also some fantastic team 'away-days' where the whole team gets together – usually involving a fun social event in the evening."

"The culture here is genuinely lovely. I haven't met anyone here who I felt didn't have the time to talk to me. Within and between teams, the social environment is really friendly, at both the senior and junior ends. This applies during office hours, but also in the pub on a Friday night. There's a lot of cooperation between teams, and everyone always has time to help out their colleagues in other disciplines. Obviously it varies depending on the nature of the work, but I have been able to work frequently with other teams during my time here."

"My work/life balance is excellent. There is a real mix of age groups and socially there is always something going on. Trainees are expected to help out with the office charity and social committees and this is a great way to get involved and feel part of the firm."
First year trainee, Norwich
"The firm has a very collegiate atmosphere, there is no enforced hierarchy and everyone supports each other. There are team social events ranging from team drinks in the local to more organised events, as well as office-wide events organised by the Sports & Social committee."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"Whilst there is a clear hierarchy, all levels of staff are valued. Everyone is approachable and teamwork is actively encouraged. There are countless opportunities for socialising (pay day drinks sponsored by the firm!) and sporting activities."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Whilst still a traditional law firm (with associated hierarchies and seniorities) it is a very welcoming firm and non-elitist firm. Trainees are valued as individuals and their contribution to the firm's work is taken seriously."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"The culture is very friendly, social and collaborative. During working hours all the fee earners are very approachable and understand the value of providing training and feedback. Outside of work hours, the firm organises lots of events including bingo nights, curry nights and office parties. There is a core group of young individuals in the Norwich office who consistently socialise outside of office hours."
Second year trainee, Norwich
"My current team really gel and work well together, and they do socialise outside work. The hierarchy does not manifest itself in a negative way. While in my experience the atmosphere varies depending on the team you are in, in general the firm is a supportive and sociable environment for a trainee."

"Mills & Reeve has a very collegiate structure and there are lots of opportunities to get involved both inside and outside of office hours such as playing for the firm's sports team or participating in corporate social responsibility and pro bono schemes."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"The work-life balance is excellent so there is plenty of time to socialise. Trainees are encouraged to take part in as many extra-curricular activities as possible which is aided greatly by the Birmingham Trainee Solicitor Society (BTSS). The trainees organise 'pay-day drinks' which is subsidised by the firm and is always well attended. This is a great way to meet other members of the firm that you don't work directly with. Teamwork is a major asset at Mills & Reeve. Every fee earner and partner is approachable and has time to talk to you and offer advice if you need it. There is no intimidating hierarchy and everyone is valued by their team."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"Everyone is willing to help, no matter how busy they are. There are plenty of team lunches and firm drinks so it is easy to get to know everyone which means settling into new departments is quite easy. There is also a social committee which organise some great firm events. The structure of the firm means that you keep in contact with colleagues in the same sector across the different offices which is great."
First year trainee, Manchester
"The structure is quite flat, partners work alongside trainees and in open plan. Teams work closely together drawing on whatever resource they can. There is a very good social scene whether it be organised events by our Sports and Social Committee or the local junior lawyer groups or just colleagues in the pub next door after work."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"The firm has a highly collaborative culture. We work together closely and combine our expertise to provide the best advice to the client. All members of staff from partners to fellow trainees are completely approachable and willing to help."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"Having an open-plan office means that I sit next to partners, associates, etc. Everyone is very sociable both in the office and after-hours. Many teams go for after work drinks and the firm has a Charity Committee and Sports & Social Committee where events are organised every month for employees."
Second year trainee, Norwich
"We have an open-plan office which means we have access to those at all levels of the hierarchy. The hours are very reasonable and we get involved in a number of social activities. We have a real collaborative culture which really adds to working there."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"The culture in the firm is really friendly and open. There is no real feel of structure or hierarchy and everyone works together as a team. The trainees and other colleagues have numerous opportunities to socialise together and the firm are keen on running activities in which everyone can get involved in."
First year trainee, Norwich
"There is not really a culture of presenteeism - people are not expected to hang around if they have completed their work. The firm is hierarchical, but I think you would expect that in most organisations, and law firms in particular. However, partners and senior members of staff are willing to listen to juniors and clearly value their input. The culture outside of the office is great. There are loads of sporting and social activities to get involved with."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"People are approachable, cooperation and teamwork are good. Plenty of opportunities to socialise and most of my team have a drink in the next-door pub of a Friday night!"

"Generally incredibly good, with people at all levels being sociable and approachable. There are a few exceptions, but that is to be expected in a firm of our size."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"From conversations with other trainee peers, there is simply no regional firms which comes close to M&R. Fee earners at all levels are more than willing to help, partners included. There is no social hierarchy here - everyone stands on an equal footing."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"The offices are open-plan, which means you may be sitting next to a senior solicitor or partner. I find this to be really valuable - it makes it easier to forge relationships with all employees and it is very valuable to be able to overhear phone conversations, etc. which helps with the learning process. Everyone is very friendly and approachable - I find that when I have a question about something, there is always someone I can ask who will take the time to help me. The firm do promote the fact that they have a good work/life balance, which I wholeheartedly agree with. There is a Sports & Social Committee and a Charity Committee which you can get involved in. The firm has a budget for social events which means there are regular out of work activities."
First year trainee, Norwich
"Staff recognise that the work/life balance is important. Partners and senior solicitors are easy to approach and there is genuinely a sense of teamwork. Trainees are encouraged to attend events throughout Birmingham and broaden their professional networks."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"We are open-plan, which means you sit with partners and associates. The hours are very good and there are plenty of opportunities to socialise with your colleagues. Lots of trainee events in particular!"
First year trainee, Birmingham
"The culture of the firm is almost certainly the best thing about working for Mills & Reeve. Everyone is very friendly and approachable, and fee earners will always make time for you, even in the busiest departments."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Very friendly firm with a good atmosphere - you will always find someone to go to the pub with after a long day! Trainee groups are always very social and there are a lot of activities to get involved in out of hours - for example, young professional groups, sports, office quizzes, etc. A trainee's social life is not restricted to socialising only with the other trainees, and you will find yourself getting to know many NQs and other juniors across the firm. A friendly atmosphere lends to good teamwork."
