2017

"The pay is relative to other firms although I think the new qualifier salary is slightly lower than competitor firms. All staff receive a yearly bonus that's the same for support staff and fee earners. Fee earners are also given discretionary bonuses, although trainees don't get this."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Cambridge living costs are high and getting close to London prices. Because of this, I feel that the trainee salary is slightly low (particularly in this office). However, the firm is very open and transparent about pay and about the bonuses."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The trainee salary is generally pretty good, although lagging behind other top 50 firms."
First year trainee, Norwich
"I really like that there is an all-firm bonus where the same amount is given to everyone who works at M&R regardless of role. I think pay for fee earners is fine and reflective of their hours and responsibility, in the main. Pay for support staff is not as good though."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Given that it is very expensive to live in Cambridge, a higher salary would be appreciated but I value a good work/life balance above pay so I would still rather work at a firm like this one. It hasn't increased for quite a few years however so I do think it should be reassessed. Bonuses seem to be assessed in a very fair way."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The pay is exactly the same as at other firms in the region and in our market. As you have no chargeable-hours target you don't really receive bonuses but small ones are sometimes given firm-wide at Christmas and at the end of the financial year."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"We have a great bonus scheme that entitles everyone, business and legal support staff included, to the same bonus."
Second year trainee, Cambridge

2016

"The pay is good. Trainees are paid the same across all offices. However, given the higher cost of living in Cambridge, this could be reflected in trainee salaries. There is usually a bonus at Christmas and one in the summer, which is given to all staff."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"I am very happy with my current rate of pay, which is notably high for a regional firm. The bonuses are generous and include an all-staff bonus each July and another at Christmas."
Second year trainee, Norwich
"Good salary and benefits package."
Second year trainee, Norwich
"The pay is not really commensurate with the house prices in Cambridge – it may be more suitable for the other M&R offices though."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"Pay is consistent with market rates and new qualifier salaries are at the top end for Birmingham."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Could be a lot better as it does not take into account Cambridge living. Cambridge is a very expensive place to live, and buying a house is ridiculous. It makes me sad to think how much better a house I could afford if I lived in Birmingham or Manchester."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"The pay is quite good once you qualify. It's not on a par with London firms, but then you get a better work/life balance."
Second year trainee, Cambridge

2015

"I believe that considering the high cost of living in Cambridge (not too dissimilar to London) the salary is a bit too low for Cambridge trainees."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The pay is good. There is usually a bonus at Christmas and one in the summer. The amount is the same for all staff which is reflective of the firm's ethos that everyone's contribution counts."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"We get the same pay as is on offer at all the other big firms in Birmingham."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Pay is not bad and I wouldn't really expect to be paid more as a trainee. However, given the high cost of living in Cambridge and the fact that having Mills & Reeve on your CV is seen as attractive to London firms, salaries for qualified lawyers could be higher."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"I think the rate of pay for trainees is excellent at my firm. Also, we, along with all other fee earners at the firm, receive substantial bonuses at Christmas and in summer. I am very satisfied with the salary and bonuses."
First year trainee, Norwich

2014

"Pay is the highest in the region although it is still a long way behind London. The Christmas bonus is minimal."
First year trainee, Norwich
"Pay is not as high as in London, but I have no complaints."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The pay is excellent for a first year trainee and very competitive for Birmingham. There is a Christmas bonus that goes to all members of staff."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"The pay is less that other firms but that comes as part of the work/life balance."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"I am happy with pay for my level and we are rewarded with a bonus around Christmas time!"
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Salaries are proportionate and very good for rates outside London. There has been a really positive increase in the training salary last year and the increase on qualification is something good to work towards."
First year trainee, Norwich
"The pay is at par with the average offered by other firms of the same calibre."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"In my opinion the salary could be higher. Especially given we are doing London work."
Second year trainee, Cambridge

2013

"The basic pay could be higher to be more in line with other firms at a similar level. Bonuses are normally quite good and the firm uses a fair system in my opinion."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
"Trainee salaries are lower than those of peers at other regional firms, although the pay difference does balance out at NQ level."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I think the pay for trainees and NQs is on a par with other major players in Birmingham. Bonuses are not governed by individual performance for trainees."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Mills & Reeve pay very well for a Norwich firm - I have had no problems with the salary and have been able to live comfortably on it."
First year trainee, Norwich
"The pay is less than other firms of this size, but we do work much better hours!"
First year trainee, Birmingham
"Trainee pay is not in line with competitors, but there is a significant increase on qualification."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The pay is not high enough for a firm that prides itself on doing City work, out of the City."
Second year trainee, Cambridge
