I applied to Motability Operations after having come across the Graduate Programme online. I admit, I didn’t really know much about Motability Operations prior to applying, and so I did some research online to see what the company was about. I was initially drawn in by the type of work Motability Operations does and the service it provides to its customers, but what really appealed to me was its commercial focus and high performance culture. I sent in my application and after a friendly assessment process and I was lucky enough to be successful. My advice for anyone applying would be to do your research and be confident!
The Graduate Programme itself is really varied in that it gives you the opportunity to rotate across departments and undertake different roles during the 18 months. I have found this to be invaluable for my development, and it has been great to experience both specialised and operational teams over my first two placements. I would also note that I have felt supported at every stage in the programme so far. Each graduate is assigned their own Sponsor and Mentor who provide guidance throughout the programme, and this is really complemented by the supportive and friendly environment at MO.
My first placement was in the Programme Management Office (PMO) within our IT department. The PMO team is responsible for maintaining standards for project management, and ensuring that each of our IT programmes and projects are run in line with the MO project delivery framework and governance controls. The main focus of my first placement was the co-ordination of the business case for one of our biggest current IT programmes – The Pricing Project. It was great to have been given the responsibility to manage and own this project, and it gave me the opportunity to work with key stakeholders from across the business.
My second placement is within the Project Team in Dealer Services, working on the roll out of a new online system to our entire 4500 strong dealer network. This has meant coordinating the training and communications activity for those dealerships, whilst also creating a supportive environment to MO Dealer Services employees in readiness for the new system going live. I have enjoyed working on the dealer side of the business because it has allowed me to work and interact with our external stakeholders, and get a good understanding of their role in the Motability Scheme.
The best part about the programme for me is being able to get involved in different pieces of work alongside my placement that enable me to grow and utilise different skills. For example, in my current role I was given the opportunity to lead the recruitment of 12 temps to help manage call volumes for the launch of the new system. This has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I have enjoyed seeing my confidence grow throughout the process.
