"It varies on each matter but I will often have a large amount of client contact at work, especially when negotiating matters and when the client has queries."

"I have found that it varies depending on seats, but personally I have had a lot of client interaction and more responsibility than I expected."
First year trainee, London
"This varies depending on the team you are with and the value of the matter. If people are comfortable with me carrying out a particular task directly for the client, they will let me. I do not feel totally hidden away; it is probably a reflection of the good supervision and training we receive."
Second year trainee, London
"Responsibility and types of work vary between seats. Some seats give trainees much more responsibility than others. Client interaction has also varied, one seat involved a lot, another none at all. Tasks range from photocopying to drafting documents and calling clients."

"I believe that the trainee experience is typical of any mid-size law firm. Occasionally something really interesting hits my desk, however, in transactional departments it is normally just churning out deals. I found that while the client contact is typically low, the contact does vary from seat to seat. Day to day responsibilities depend largely on the type of department: advisory departments typically involve a lot of research while transactional departments usually involve drafting ancillary documents, and also elements of project management."

"As a trainee you get given a lot of responsibility from the day you start. You are handed your own files, and expected to run them, however there is a lot of support as and when you request it. I have been lucky in the sense that I have had a lot of client interaction, but I think it really depends on the departments you are in. The firm does try its best to give trainees as much exposure to clients as possible, though. My day-to-day responsibilities are constantly changing, so they are hard to comment on. That said, on top of my usual workload there are plenty of other activities, clubs and charity events which you can get involved in."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I try to help associates and partners wherever I can: it is my job to take things off their desks and relieve them of tasks."
Second year trainee, London
"There is generally a lot of client interaction via emails and telephone calls. Attending client meetings as a trainee is less common, but may be more frequent depending what department you are in. Day-to-day responsibilities also depend on your department and how busy it is. Generally, the quality of work afforded to trainees is good."
First year trainee, London
"I found there to be a great deal of client interaction; with few elements of mundane trainee work."
Second year trainee, London
"I am given a great amount of responsibility and a good variety of interesting work at the firm. Senior colleagues make an effort to take you to face-to-face client meetings, and on a day-to-day level there is client interaction all the time."

"Levels of responsibility can vary from department to department but on the whole, if you want responsibility, it is there to take. Client interaction varies hugely from department to department but in terms of good and challenging work, if you put in the effort and do a good job, associates and partners often come back to give you challenging but fulfilling tasks."
Second year trainee, London
"A trainee's role can be quite varied, from very engaging tasks to the more mundane. Generally I feel that teams try to involve trainees in interesting work and make good use of our skills. Client interaction varies across the different teams but generally there is sufficient client contact."
Second year trainee, London
"As a qualification seat trainee (i.e. I am doing my last seat in the department I will qualify into) I am currently working as an associate. I have my own clients, files and workload - which is brilliant and terrifying in equal measure!"
Second year trainee, Sheffield
"I am often invited to client meetings and consultations with Counsel, etc. I am also encouraged to liaise directly with the client via telephone/email regularly. Day-to-day work can vary from more demanding administrative tasks, to drafting and managing my own files. A lot of responsibility is given from an early stage."
First year trainee, London
"Compared to what I know of other firms, trainees at Nabarro are given quite a lot of client contact and I have received a lot of interesting work with a relatively high degree of responsibility for client communication and drafting."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I have very regular client contact - I speak to a number of clients on a daily basis. The standard of work is generally very high, and I have been given lots of responsibility."
