What you’ll be doing

You’ll experience the full spectrum of operational route activities through a series of placements, giving you real first-hand experience of how the railway is run as a business. By exploring our key stakeholder relationships and liaising with the train and freight operators, you’ll learn about the challenges we all face as we work together to deliver excellent customer service.

Through a mix of office-based and front line activities, including some shift work, you’ll be out in all weathers getting your hands dirty. Depending on your chosen route, you might be walking on the roof of Waterloo station, or exploring the challenges faced by our rural routes in Scotland.

You’ll gain an understanding of the four main areas in a route: the customer; operational overviews; business services and other activities. Throughout your placements you’ll build up a fantastic all-round knowledge of the railway and get to travel the country at the same time.
