National Management Trainee
The national graduate development programme for local government (ngdp) is a two-year development programme for committed and passionate graduates who want to make a difference to people and communities.
Our fast-track management trainees are employed by one of the over 50 participating local councils who take part, providing you with a great range of choices of where you would like to interview. Trainees enjoy placements in key areas such as policy and strategy, front-line service delivery and operational functions within their council. This broad experience enables trainees to form a detailed understanding of the many different aspects of local government and the issues relating to delivering services to local communities. Trainees also benefit from being part of a national peer group working towards a postgraduate qualification in Leadership and Management.
The ngdp is a launchpad for your career in local government and beyond. Since 2002, over 1,000 graduates have completed the ngdp, with many now holding influential managerial and policy roles in local authorities and the wider public sector. Local government is the largest and most diverse employer in England, with around 1.2 million staff in over 400 local authorities and in excess of 500 different occupational areas. Find where you fit on the ngdp!
