Interview Questions

2016

"One question that I remember was to talk about an upcoming legal development. You are expected to talk about the measure in depth, the potential impact on Olswang's clients and the impact on the sector."
Second year trainee, London
"I don't think I mentioned anything about the law or law firms in my interview. The firm wants people who are connected with the world they live in and can apply current affairs to a client's needs and know how they will affect the future of the business. You have to be able to think logistically and laterally. How will movements in one business area affect another business area? What will the end result be? Why is it important/not important? Who stands to lose or gain?"
First year trainee, London
"The partner interview was competency-based. I also had a commercial awareness interview with a senior associate."

"How do you maintain relationships? How do you organise a project? Describe the evolution of a technical area of law you're interested in."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked about my strengths and weaknesses. I had to give examples of times when I had shown teamwork and what I saw as future challenges."
First year trainee, London

2015

"My interviews were more like conversations and went through everything you would expect about why law, why Olswang, what I wanted to do eventually in the future, a discussion of my CV and after my vacation scheme, a discussion of what I had experienced. There is a separate Commercial Awareness interview now so I think most of the 'nasty' questions are in there!"
Second year trainee, London
"The questions I was asked were mostly competency-based. Now there is also a commercial awareness interview."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked questions regarding a recent legal development that interested me - i.e. why I found it interesting, what its impact on the industry would be and its general importance."
First year trainee, London
"There was nothing out the ordinary in my interview. I was asked many competency-based questions, e.g. "describe a situation when..." and so on."
First year trainee, London

2014

"I was asked why I thought I'd be good at Olswang and what would I bring that is different from other people."
Second year trainee, London
"The interview questions didn't contain anything nasty! I was asked about the vacation scheme, and it felt more like a chat than an interview. At our firm personality counts, and they want to get to know the real you, not what you think they want to hear!"
First year trainee, London
"Questions included: Why law? Why Olswang? If you were stuck in the office on a Friday night whilst your supervisor and the other associates were in the pub and a client calls asking for some advice as to whether they should invest in a business for £50m, what would you say?"
Second year trainee, London
"Generally the questions in my interview focused very much on my own CV and experience, and what lessons I had drawn from my previous work."
First year trainee, Reading
"I was asked about my hobbies, interests, experience and ambitions."
Second year trainee, London
"Questions in my interview included: "How would your siblings describe you?" "Why law?" "Why Olswang?" "How do you think the recession has affected law firms?"."
Second year trainee, London
