"You have a lot of support, including another trainee 'buddy', a mentor, a supervisor, and the training principal."

"Whether lawyers make good mentors varies widely from one lawyer to another but, if you're looking for some advice, you can always find someone to speak to. Feedback can be sporadic. The firm does try but some lawyers aren't as good about giving it (especially the more senior ones)."

"Trainees have supervisors in each department as well a mentor throughout the two years. I feel that department supervisors act more like mentors, as they are the people who supervise your work day to day and are also the people you would speak to if you had an issue. Lawyers here are appreciative of the work that trainees put in and it's nice that associates and partners thank us for the work we have done and make us feel like part of the team. At the same time, where there are areas we can work on, we are given constructive criticism, which is crucial for our professional development."

"We each get assigned a mentor who will be available for support. My mentor is engaged and interested and I feel very supported. Everyone is pretty much available for questions or guidance in smaller departments. We have mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisals. There really is an open atmosphere and trainees are encouraged to go to any training that might be relevant – it's also a good chance to mix with people from other departments."

"Solicitors and partners are very accessible and make good mentors. My supervisors have been supportive and helpful and have been good at giving me feedback throughout my training contract. We have a mid-seat appraisal with our supervisors and then an end-of-seat appraisal with HR and the training principal."

"Supervisors are excellent and extremely approachable, as are other partners. You're always given the confidence to speak up and ask questions."

"The people selected as supervisors and mentors have been universally good in my experience."
Second year trainee, London
"I have had fabulous mentoring - my mentor has from day one been very welcoming and has looked out for me, making sure that I am happy at work. My supervisor has been great in providing me a variety of work to do to give me as a broad a training experience as possible."

"My supervisor is a very good mentor. She always takes the time to provide context to a task and gives me a good insight into the strategy of a case. Other members of the team are also very approachable and take time to feedback where there is a particular area which they think it would be valuable for us to discuss. I feel that I receive a very high level of recognition for my work and that work providers are always very grateful."

"The firm is generally good on mentoring. Formal appraisals could be better organised. On one occasion, the end of seat appraisal meeting was delayed until we were in a different department, which resulted in us addressing the issues raised much later. However, it seems that this issue has been identified and the process is being improved."

"The feedback I receive on work I do is regular and speedy. This is important to me as a first-seater. Corporate is a very fast moving seat and the content of my workload may look very different from one day to another. Associates and partners are very quick to give me feedback on work I have done for them, and will always take the time to explain what is required of a task so I understand the input I am making."

"The majority of people at the firm are very approachable. Trainees sit in an office with their supervisor, usually a lawyer who is a few years qualified. Several supervisors also trained at the firm so they can truly relate to the Orrick trainee experience. My supervisor has been incredibly supportive, and we have a continuous process of checking work and feeding back."

"I think that mentoring and informal training is really dependent on who you get to sit with."
Second year trainee, London
"The more substantial work that I do is usually reviewed by a partner who gives me a detailed review so that I can see where I went right or wrong. However, I found that it sometimes took a long time to get this feedback, and with smaller jobs there isn't a great deal of feedback. We have mid-seat and end-of-seat reviews."

"I have found that people here are always happy to give advice."

"I have found it very easy to do work alongside partners and solicitors. The feedback depends on the individual and how busy they are, but the level and variety of tasks means that you learn on your feet very quickly."
