I was attracted to Orrick due to the size of the firm and trainee intake as well as the sector focus and culture. The size of the trainee intake was one of the most important factors as I did not want to be at a firm with a huge army of trainees, whilst at the same time I did not want to be somewhere with only one or two trainees. The size of Orrick's trainee intake ensures you are known by associates and partners throughout the firm and receive good quality work, however is not so small that you feel isolated or lack the collegiate atmosphere of a trainee intake.
Duties and activities vary significantly depending on the department, however the size of Orrick and the work carried out by the firm allows trainees to obtain a broad range of experience as trainees are encouraged to take the lead and have more responsibility on relatively smaller transactions, whilst playing a more typical 'trainee role' on larger deals.
I enjoy the freedom I am provided to liaise with clients and progress matters independently, whilst working within a supportive genuinely 'open door' environment.
Orrick is a great place to work primarily due to the people and the culture installed in the firm. There is a friendly and supportive atmosphere across all departments and, when combined with the broad range of high level work, there is an environment which is ideal for an aspiring young lawyer.
